My wife is a member of this group and pointed me to your post.

Firstly, allow me to explain that I have been in the forces for 18 years, and from 1999 until 2002 I co-ordinated Territorial Units in the London area. I therefore know how they operate and can tell you with some certainty that what you are suggesting is erroneous.

It is impossible to "rotate" for a couple of weeks into a combat area, and no further Territorial Regiments have been sent into any overseas theatre since late 2004. This is a Ministerial steer, and has not been rescinded. I should know as I have been in Afghanistan and Iraq since 2003 and I still keep ties to my old job.

Therefore, you must be replacing home based troops, in which case this is not done on a weekly basis. It is done only on a weekend basis when TA Units are required for exercise and cross duty. It is also very rare as these contingencies are permanently in place, even during wartime. As I said, I co-ordinated all of London for over 3 years so I know what I am talking about.

So, since you can ONLY belong to a part time unit (the re-activation of service for regular personnel only occurs in laughable bad American movies), why are you claiming that you are "shipping out" for "a few weeks"?

I'm none too fussed about it,since you and I are both over 21 (and both have the same name - even though you spell yours wrongly) but it's not on, this sort of spam going onto a kid's site. That makes me a bit miffed.

Apologies for posting on your private messages. I must confess that I did not know that it was such, and ask you to pardon my ignorance.

My reasoning was that I saw fit to challenge what I saw to be gross errors on the part of the poster called Jack. I posted everywhere he had made the outrageous claim, so that he would be corrected.

It's simply that I do not like to see misrepresentation of my profession by wannabies and pretenders. It's disrespectful to me and to the men and women of the armed forces currently fighting this unpopular war.

Once again, I apologise for using your personal space to correct Jack.

PS If I may also cross examine Evadne on one point about my inappropriate spam on a "kid's site" (this I take to mean Pattichild's personal space). Perhaps she might also direct Jack to desist from swearing in French (which the operator evidently understands) on it.

Tell Jack yourself - I merely stated am opinion.

And... as you were well aware that you had posted on three separate Personal Spaces (I mentioned this 2 days ago) - would it not occur to you to do the honourable thing?

However, if they have actually served in combat and have occasion to meet up with someone who boasts about serving though actually hasn't I feel sure that if they were truly honourable they would DEFEND (you see how that word comes in there?) their fellows.

The UAE is a very interesting place, I hear. My cousin works in Oman for a security firm and is back and forth there on business. He raves about it, though he did get half a kilo of something Class A planted on him by a corrupt officer of the law when he was in Dubai. He had to pay the guy a few hundred dollars to "forget" the incident. That was years ago, though and he has had no other trouble.

I've never been there myself. Just Saudi, Kuwait and Iraq for my sins.

It really galls me when people post on these things pretending to be service personnel, which is why I started this whole thing.

This Jack's story just doesn't add up, I'm afraid. Whether he's telling the tale to fool gullible women or simply to make himself look heroic doesn't concern me in the least. I'm simply not interested in his motives. The fact of the matter is, he has to be lying. A genuine squaddie (even a part timer) would not make that mistake.

PS I know how to spell juvenile, but I thought to correct Evadne on her spelling while she was referring to my post as "juvenille" would be juvenile. Oh, darn...

Very very good...between you and me, I think the guy is talking out of his backside. But hey, what can you do? Clearly we all dream, however to dream and cross paths of fantasy and reality is just dangerous! Isnt that the path of psychopaths? Ah well, what can you do? And I totally agree with your motives of response. People clearly shouldn't insult through lying. But what do I know? Pardon the use of language here, however, I am hardly Oscar Wilde. I don't know if the guy is a psychopath, but if he actually truly believes that these events are happening, then he may be pathological. If he does not believe them and knows them to be lies, then he is something else. I know little about him, but I absolutely know his information on this occasion was duff.

It's an easy lie to spot for someone actually in the services, as not even the Hereford Gun Club go away for a couple of weeks on "rotation".

I mean, if you're going to lie, at least do your homework so you do not get caught.

Having said that, it can all be easily checked by contacting service personnel you know or by contacting the MOD or TA via their websites.
