baby sleep
Posted Nov 20, 2002
Young alyson slept 3.5 hours woke up, ate and slept another 3.5 hours last night, in what the missus and I are considering a near-miracle.
I, for the first time in months, slept on the couch in anticipation of another night beprived of slumber.

Tested
Posted Nov 15, 2002
I updated my page for the first time in what seems like forever. I thought, hmm, hiaku! I was going to write an ode, but the hiaku seems more calming somehow.
My test was today. I took the USMLE Step 2. 8 hours, 400 questions, multiple choice (with answers A thru Y on occassion).
Anyway, I'm pretty brain-fried. It's amazing I can do anything tonight. Not that Alyson notices. Cry, eat, poop. . blah blah blah.
ok.
That's it. I'm cruising over to www.televisioinwithoutpity.com for a few minutes and then on to bed.

A free man?
Posted Jun 21, 2002
Surgery is now over! I can return to my life. But alas, my life is moving tomorrow. I found a great house a few months ago. I could affor dit, so I bought it. But the date for my move out of my condo and into the house is tomorrow. So, as I have been awake pretending to study for most of the night, and I have to pack all night tonight, I shall become nocturnal. Sleep the rest of the day and pack until the movers come in the morning. Tell the to unload the bedroom furniture first thing in the AM, then go back to bed as soon as they finish moving the rest of the furniture. I'll sleep when they leave, then go and get my boxes myself.
Good plan eh?
I'm so screwed.

After all these years, finally a journal entry
Posted Jun 9, 2002
Week 6 (of 7) of surgery is soon to be complete. It's 10:24 PM Saturday and in 12 short hours I can go home. And sleep until week 7 begins on Monday.
My life completely on PAUSE. My friends are gracious enough to not call me. Calling me only makes me feel guilty because I cannot return their phone calls.
OK, I will no longer whine. Nobody likes a whiner. From here on out I will not type any self-indulgant self-pitying crap.
OK, well, if I do I'll certainly erase it before it goes on too long.
Unless, you know, it's the really clever funny kind of whining that people can snicker at appreciatively (BTW is that a word?).
Anyway, I am trolling through the ranks of researchers striking up converstaions and adding to others a lot more these days. When we're slow at the hospital, h2g2 is a god-send because so many sites are blocked by the web-nanny type programs (the onion??? they blocked the onion.com for chrissakes!!!) and h2g2 is flying safely under the radar.
H2G2 my link with the rest of the "real" world.
(I have not been paid for this testimonial, but I'm willing to negotiate)

Introducing a cat to a new household
Posted Oct 30, 2000
I have a new cat. My wife and I were told to call him Chester, by friends of his previous owner (who had a stroke and could not longer take care of him). We already love him. He is sweet in his curiosity and brave because we have another cat, Vanessa, who torments him, but cannot diminish his growing desire to reach out to the rest of our house and our lives.
Vanessa was our first pet. She was taken from the Animal Pound after an extended stay (nearly 3 months). The first six months with Vanessa were challenging. She had lived in a cage long enough to be a litle mean. Also, she lived without others long enough to forget how to be loved. Three years later we have learned from her that she will tell us when she wants our love, when she wants to play and when she is going to de the little devil she so loves to be. Friends will often make the mistake of picking her up without permission. Anyone new to Vanessa's personal space learns fast, but if they don't we always keep the bandages handy.
She has been our only pet. She is the lady of our flat. We know she think's herself the ruler of her world.
She was not thrilled by our transgression with another cat. For the last week and a half she has hunted Chester, thankfully with little success. Her lonely, powerful rule as our master may result simply in Vanessa having another subject.
To avoid excess torture to our new roommate, we closed to door to Chester's room for a few days. This privacy allowed for relatively safe acclimation to both us and Vanessa. Of course, we had to supply Chester independent facilities and food. We lest the door open a few nights ago. There was some hissing and Vanessa, the plumper of the two, lumbered after Chester in chase the few times he tried to explore. He persisted though and now he has been to our kitchen, pantry and WC. Vanessa is often a few steps behind him, guarding aainst too much intrusion.
Essentially we let the cats interact on their own terms. They will hiss and scratch whether we like it or not. As long as they don't destroy anything, including one another, then they will learn to live with each other so long as we do not interfere.
