The Journale that Hath No Pointe
broelan Started conversation Jan 3, 2008
Sort of a companion piece to the other, with even less of a point.
Again, for idle curiosity, I'm wondering how many movies I watch in a year. I know how many I fork out for, on average (damn few, I think it was three I went to see last year), and I buy more than I go to see. But then, there's the Netflix queue.
So, I'm going to try to keep track of all the movies I watch this year. Here are my "rules" for what counts:
1 - All full-length movies, in any format: DVD, VHS or in the theatre; whether bought, borrowed, or rented.
2 - Full-length movies on television, whether commercial or uncut.
3 - Full-length movies online.
4 - Must see entire movie.
5 - Repeats okay, so long as I see the entire movie each time. ('Cars' might be on here a couple dozen times).
6 - Television shows on DVD do not count.
Discussion here is fine, but I expect most people subscribed will get bored pretty quickly.
And I haven't seen any movies since the first, so there's nothing to list yet.

We haven't been to a movie theater in years, but we do watch them on TV and we buy DVDs of the ones we want to see again. We just watched "Heat" with Al Pacino and Robert DiNiro. (That was our New Year's Eve celebration--popcorn and a movie--at home.)

I acn thoroughly recommend 'Das Leben der Anderen' (The Lives of Others), which I watched on Saturday. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405094/
Looking forward to 'Lust, Caution', which I......acquired last night. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808357/

Okay, this afternoon I watched 'Cars'.
I wonder if I should keep one running total for movies in general and another one just for 'Cars'?
I do love this movie, but I'm afraid that by the time Chunk is five I'm going to be sick to death of it. I seriously can't imagine that happening, but I guess it's a possibility.
I discovered tonight that my parents have the Pixar Shorts DVD, which is on my birthday list. While cleaning house today I found I have a coupon for $5 off at Costco, which of course expired yesterday.

This week I watched The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe because I had only watched it once before. So, that's two. Then I also saw
3 - Four Weddings and a Funeral
and
4 - Transformers, or really I just finished watching it. I had started it back around the new year. In terms of movies I've watched while pretty firm in the belief they wouldn't appeal to me, this ranks second. I did't really have any desire to see it, then my sister went with my brother-in-law to see it and just gushed about it. So, I was curious, but still convinced I wouldn't really enjoy it that much. Wow. I'll have to sit through it again sometime without the two-week intermission.

Somehow I managed to get Cars in twice this week. Silly toddlers! Gets up in the morning, turns on the TV, points to the DVDs and says 'Kachow?' (That's Lightening's catchphrase, for those who aren't as intimately familiar with this movie as I am )
So that makes 3 for Cars, and 6 total. I'm sure I watched something else, but can't for the life of me remember what it was.

I wonder, does a Dean Martin Celebrity Roast count as a television show?
Since it's my journal and I make up the rules, I'm going to say no, they don't. At least, not in the sense that I meant when I wrote that.
So I watched the Roast featuring Frank Sinatra the other day. I was worried that after all those years a lot of the humor would have been topical to the point of not being funny any more (it was recorded in 1977). I'm glad I was wrong. I have a couple others to watch, too... Jimmy Stewart and Dean Martin.
And I saw Cars. Again. I know I should be sick of it already, but I just love that movie.

I finally sat down and watched another movie all the way through. And it wasn't even Cars! My 9th movie this year was Ocean's 13, which was way better than 12. Still not as good as 11, though. I hope they're done now.
I watched it through twice, and much of it made more sense the second time through.

10 - Transporter 2
Any time you get to watch Jason Statham kick butt it's going to be a good time, but this one really requires too much suspension of belief. Ramping the Audi up for an angled jump at a crane hook to dislodge the bomb on the bottom of the car just at the moment of detonation and landing the car in drivable condition... No, I don't think so. The first one was miles better.
Saw previews for The Bank Job this week, too - looks good

Transporter is what happens when you take a bloke who's never acted before, put him in a couple of films where he's pretty much playing himself, and then he tries to make a career of acting.

Statham is never going to win awards. That doesn't mean that some of his films aren't just good fun. The Transporter was fun. He doesn't have to be a great actor, because I'm dazzled by the explosions, car chases and fights. That's okay sometimes. I'm not a very discriminating audience (although I am discriminating enough to realise that Ocean's 12 was CRAP, and Transporter 2 not far behind).
And browsing IMDb this morning I saw there will be a Transporter 3 next year. I hope it's more like the first one.

I saw that too. He's also going to be in a film called The Brazilian Job which looks like an Italian Job sequel.
This is where I'd use the erm smiley if I was prone to do so.

Yeah, but that one also has Marky Mark.
This is *my* journal, not yours, you're allowed an 'erm' if you like

Really, I've watched a few more movies. But I've had one of my Netflix discs for more than two months now, time to move on.
11 - Shrek
12 - Shrek 2
13 - Yellowbeard

Someone at work is trying to blag me into watching Yellowbeard. What's your verdict?

It was very silly. I was entertained, but I don't think it stood out in any way. I can't see taking the time to watch it again, but I don't consider the one viewing to be time wasted. Everyone involved has surely done better work.
My favourite part was probably Tommy Chong's headdress, and the door modification to allow its passage.

Nothing for weeks, then in the last six days:
14- Bridget Jones' Diary
15- Bridget Jones - Edge of Reason
(I finally read the first book, then got on a Colin Firth kick)
16- Clerks
