I almost hate to ask, but are you on Facebook? Look me up if you are, I'm pretty sure you have my name somewhere.

No, I haven't succumbed to Zuckerberg's baby yet but I might be getting to the point soon where I have no alternative, just for work purposes. I hear so many stories of how Facebook changes its policies and operations in ways that I know I wouldn't care for, and without telling anyone first, that I don't feel comfortable with it.

Are there ways to be completely private?

Not only do I miss you, I miss just popping in and visiting the site in general. I can't believe it's been a month and I'm just now getting back to you!

I am probably not nearly as diligent with my privacy as I should be, but then I don't really consider stuff I share on fb to be much in the way of a personal security lapse. I'm sure there are ways to be reasonably private there, I have several friends from h2 there but still only know a handful of them by their real names, and only know their general location. A few choose to keep their screen-name identities. I probably considered doing that at the start, but I really don't have the time or energy to keep up with multiple accounts. Also, some of the people from my past that I've re-connected with by using my own name have been worth the risk, to me anyway.

I know you can set privacy settings so that people who don't know you can't see your postings or photos, and the amount of information available on your public profile is entirely up to you. Some only show a name, most show a general location (which helps you determine whether a profile is the one you're looking for when there are several people that share a name - do you know how many 'Mike Smith's there are? And I know at least two of them smiley - laugh)

On the other hand, if you're not careful all manner of information could become available. When I added the facebook app to my phone it sync'd my phone book with my friends list and I ended up with a bunch of phone numbers I didn't used to have smiley - weird (which would be down to their lack of security, not mine).

I also know of at least one person who deliberately misspelled his name so that his friends could find him, but any personal information available would be mostly useless to the casual passer by.

Gosho, you can also set up a fan page for your favorite home made brew, one in memory of your pet cat... the personal info you put on the page can be completely fictitious, or details altered I:E birthday 1-11-49 11-1-49, most of these details can be hidden anyway...plus make sure its a non important email you use to sign up with, given that when you join facebook now you get a goshoATfacebook email address or what ever you use as page title I:e http://en-gb.facebook.com/castlehillholidays
me, or page I use a few goshos on there this could be you on a monday morning after busy weekend lol http://en-gb.facebook.com/gosho.petrov.739

Staying busy. Too busy to hang around here much, unfortunately. I do like the fact that when I do have time to pop in, you're still here smiley - smiley

Is Austin having the same unseasonably cool spring that we're having?

Not really. It's been warmer than average most of the time, occasional 80s in Jan and Feb, some 90s in March and April, although we had a cold front yesterday morning that kept us in the 50s all day yesterday and we broke a record last night for coldest My 3rd temperature (44°) and it'll be even colder tonight smiley - brr And we didn't really get a winter again this year. There was a brief cold spell before Christmas with a night or two of freezing temps, but that's about the height of it. It's pretty much been spring since the beginning of the year. It's kind of a Good Thing really because my winter jacket finally gave up the ghost after 20 years of faithful service and fell apart, and I haven't got a new one yet. Now it's May and I don't need to smiley - biggrin

Actually now would be the best time to get one, seeing as they're all on clearance.

We were at Sears a couple of weeks ago, and their Lands' End winter stuff was all 75% off. They had a bunch of Barn coats that would have been $20 or $25. Several years ago I desperately wanted one, but I have so many jackets and coats now I just couldn't justify buying another, regardless of the price. They were really nice; heavy duty duck canvas with a flannel lining. And Lands' End stuff lasts FOREVER.

(For that matter, they had a mid-length wool/cashmere blend coat that was originally a dollar shy of $300 that would have been $44... I managed not to buy that, either).

On reflection, winter clothing in a Texas Sears store was probably on sale in February smiley - winkeye
