Surgical Emergencies Project

Okay, it's been awhile since I've done a Uni project, and I don't think the University was open when I did mine, so this is a little different for me. We are subbing the whole project pre-PR, and submitting the project page when we're done, correct?
Shall we just use this thread for communication on the project?
I'll start at the top
Intro:
>>"Thus any individual who has a concerns about their wellbeing probably ought to get in touch with a medical professional."
Should this be "who has concerns", or "who has a concern"?
>>"insert a cannula (bendy piece of plastic)"
Um, insert where, exactly?
I would guess from context this is intravenous, but the entry doesn't specify.

And I realize that nearly 10 pm on a Sunday probably doesn't technically qualify as "weekend", but it's only nearly 4 pm in the midwest, and it's a holiday weekend in the US (so I'm right on time )

Yep, the whole thing gets subbed pre-PR, then the project summary page gets submitted to Peer Review.
>>"Thus any individual who has a concerns about their wellbeing probably ought to get in touch with a medical professional."
Should this be "who has concerns", or "who has a concern"?
It should indeed be "who has concerns"
>>"insert a cannula (bendy piece of plastic)"
Um, insert where, exactly?
I would guess from context this is intravenous, but the entry doesn't specify.
Into a vein is the correct route.

"who has concerns" has been edited.
How do you want to edit the location of the cannula placement? "insert a cannula (bendy piece of plastic) into a vein"? Did you want to be more specific? Vein in the arm, or other convenient location?
Accute Appendicitis looks fine on first read-through.
Accute Pancreatitis:
>>"the long-standing damage that may sometimes follows"
Perhaps "that may sometimes follow" or "that sometimes follows"?
>>"If enough of the pancreas is damaged, it may be necessary to given replacement insulin and gut enzymes."
"necessary to give"?, or are you trying to say something else here?

'into a vein' should be specific enough. It's usually in the arm, and I think that's where most readers would expect it to be.

"that sometimes follows"

"If enough of the pancreas is damaged, the individual may need long term replacement of insulin and gut enzymes."

I know. I haven't forgotten about you. Acutally I planned on working on it over the weekend, then discovered I didn't have internet at home. Apparently they expect me to pay the bill occasionally
I promise, I'm on it!

You're not impatient at all, and I'm being terribly rude and irresponsible. I took on your project, and I would be similarly 'impatient' in your place. Especially as you pointed out what an easy job this would be when you called for a sub. I'm really very sorry!
So - on to Diverticulitis!
I'm having trouble following the Emergency section.
"Diverticulitis represents in the cases where the infection does not settle, as a collection of pus (abscess) may form,"
Is this referring to the "accute" condition? Perhaps you're using "represents" in a manner I'm not familiar with.
Do you think a quick footnote for stoma might be helpful? (I had to look it up). Now I'm wondering what the difference is between a stoma and a colostomy.
You say surgery is warranted to 'remove the offending section of bowel', then later say 'removing the offending bowel and then joining up the ends is liable to fail'. Perhaps the primary purpose of the surgery is to bypass? Is it always temporary, usually temporary, or almost never temporary?

Bowel Obstruction and Perforation looks fine.
I corrected a minor typo in Testicular Tortion.
Extradural Haematoma looks fine.
Acute Limb Ischaemia:
>>"The result was the Fogarty catheter consists of a tube with an inflatable balloon at the end."
Something missing here. Could either be "...the Fogarty catheter *which* consists of ..." ~or~ "The result, the Fogarty catheter, consists..." Do you have a preference?

Fixed!
If you want to let me know what you want to do with the section in Diverticulitis, I believe this is just about ready to chuck into PR

Oops, missed that other post
How does this read as a replacement paragraph?
Diverticulitis represents an emergency in the cases where the infection does not settle. A collection of pus (abscess) may form, and the diverticuli may even rupture, allowing infected pus or faecal material into the abdomen. In these cases emergency surgery is warranted, to remove the offending section of bowel. The common approach is a Hartmann's operation, where the bowel upstream of the removed section is brought out to the skin to form a colostomyA stoma is a surgically-created opening whereby a hollow organ (often gut) is brought out to the skin surface. A colostomy is a stoma formed using the colon (large bowel)., while the bowel downstream from the removed section is closed over. In around a third of cases, the individual is suitable for a further operation to rejoin the bowel around six months later. The alternative to a Hartmann's would be removing the offending bowel and then joining up the ends straight away, which is liable to fail as the joined ends will be still be infected with pus or faecal material.

I know you're ready to fire me (we need a smiley). I have FINALLY finished making the last update. I'm going to go ahead and put this in PR before I get distracted again.
Sorry you had to wait so long for me to dredge through this. I've set myself a reminder to check on PR regularly for this, and when it's through I'm going to resign. Sorry I don't have the availability I thought I would have, and I'm really sorry I held your project up long enough to make me realize that.
Anyway -- off to PR!

Thanks broelan - you may think you took a while, but I've also had several months so far on a Uni project (ok, it's one with 27 entries but I've been taking too long on it) so don't sweat it.
Key: Complain about this post
