Warhammer 40,000

For more than a thousand years the Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the master of mankind by the will of the gods and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord for whom a thousand souls die each day, for whom blood is drunk and flesh eaten. Human blood and human flesh - the stuff of which the Imperium is made.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruellest and most bloody regime imaginable. This is the tale of those times. It is a universe you can live in today - if you dare - for this is a dark and terrible era where you will find little comfort or hope. If you want to take part in the adventure, then prepare yourself now. Forget the power of technology, science and common humanity. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for there is no peace among the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter and the laughter of thirsting gods.

But the universe is a big place, and, whatever happens, you will not be missed...

Warhammer 40,000

Welcome to Warhammer 40,000 (also known as WH40k), the game of tabletop battles set in the 41st millennium. It is a world of futuristic warriors, giant fighting machines and hordes of implacable aliens. Take control of the super human Space Marines; the Imperial Guard, down-trodden warriors of the Imperium; brutal, ugly Orks; sinister and elusive Eldar or the horrifying alien entities known as Tyranids. Your armies consists of many, less or more finely painted miniatures, including fierce commanders, rumbling tanks and heavy artillery. Face off against powerful sorcerers, thousands of infantry, and fast, lethal skimmers. Using dice, rulers, boltguns and chainswords, you will fight it out to the death.

Games Workshop

All Citadel Miniatures (as they are known) are made by Games Workshop, based in Nottingham, England. They also own more than 200 stores around the UK, America and Europe. Here can be bought the full range of miniatures, army and rule books, modelling equipment and scenery.

It is a turn based game, where one player moves (towards the enemy), shoots (their limbs off with powerful guns), and assaults (, hoping to chop them to bits with swords and axes). Then it is their turn, and they get to do the same to you. Whether you (or they) actually hit or wound is down to the roll of a die, so as well as loads of skill and tactics, luck is involved as well.

There are many different armies to collect (some were mentioned earlier), each necessitating a different tactic. Some are best at fighting in hand-to-hand combat (ie. Tyranids), while some would rather sit back and turn the whole thing into a long range shooting match (ie. Imperial Guard). Some are good at both (ie. Space Marines).

Remember the finely painted miniatures from earlier on? Well, they're only finely painted if you paint them finely. You see, the other aspect of the wargaming experience is the painting of your miniatures. GW sell many different colours of paint (over 100 I believe, but don't quote me on that...), as well as paintbrushes and painting tables.

There are also some good entries in the Guide concerning other games by GW:

All about the old classic http://h2g2.com/A295391">Gorkamorka, a slightly different game, where Orks battle it out between themselves in trucks and bikes.

Another one details
http://h2g2.com/A295409">Necromunda, with various human tribes fighting for space (and dosh) in the Underhive.

Or (for expert and independant advice on collecting, painting and modelling)
e-mail me, as I have many years experience in painting and playing. Of course, that's not saying I'm brilliant at either of those things).

But remember, Khorne is always on the lookout for fresh blood...
