h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

The alternative isn't much better. Most people are titling their NaJoPoMo posts in the format of "Baron Grim's NaJoPoMo - XX" where XX is the day of the month. Well, looking through a VERY long list of threads to find one particular thread with no contextual titles isn't easier.

Then there is the case of a few researchers (admirably) using this opportunity to use their daily journal posts to build an in depth Guide Entry. Now that the month is over it's time to put all these posts into a single entry. So they'll now be opening up 30 different threads to copy their daily entries from, again, with likely no contextual title. I think a single thread would have served that purpose better as well.

I'm not trying to just criticize here. I actually am trying to say that I like the single thread NaJoPoMo format. I tended to read these more attentively as opposed to some that seemed more obligatory where I would typically just skim then unsubscribe to keep my convo list more manageable.

Well I hope you enjoyed reading my posts. Posting every day wasn't a big imposition for me, as I tend to post something every day anyway.

I did notice, though, that there were very few comments in Peer Review in the month of November. Everybody was too busy reading each other's journals. As soon as the month of December, Peer Review started up again.

Heh... I'm not surprised. At the beginning of the month I gave some thought to getting back to an entry I started a (longish) while back. But I just didn't have the time. Yesterday without the flood of posts each day, I actually managed to think about that entry, find a new source, and read an article for research. It's not much, but it's progress.

Since I'm one who did an entry in her journals, I can say that, since I only had the entry bits on even numbered days, it wasn't that difficult to find the bits. If I'd done one long thread, I would've had to read through the whole thread to find what I'd written instead of just copy-and-pasting the first post from the even numbered journals, which I was able to do by going through my journal pages. I will say, though, if I do the building-an-entry bit again, I'll gather and GuideML everything daily, because tying the footnotes back in has been... interesting. (Or just have no footnotes, but this *is* me we're talking about)

I couldn't write an entry like that because the way I write entries is generally to study the subject until I know it well, then type the whole thing out in the space of about 30 minutes. I might then spend weeks polishing it but most of the work gets done in those 30 minutes.

Well, you actually *enjoy* writing The chicken entry was fairly easy for me, since I'd done all the research leading up to getting the chickens last year--I basically just needed to double check some numbers, and find links. If I hadn't had the fact that I didn't have to do it all at once, it would've been too daunting (for that matter, I've more to add once I get what I've already written GuideML'd) but taking it in stages without the built-in deadlines would've kept it stagnating. Heck, if I didn't have my chicken friend waiting to fact-check for me, as well as folks here expecting me to finish up, it'd probably just sit there indefinitely

I also like the process of writing-up after a bit of research. I like the way things fall into place.

Not everything falls into the best place at first though, and there are many rewrites before the Entry goes in. And during Peer Review, and then some after.

I like that about h2g2, you can revise endlessly, even after publication.
