Gnomon - time to move on

28 years married today! Unfortunately, I am suffering from a bad cold, so we didn't go out anywhere special. I cooked up a nice vegetarian risotto and we stayed in. We'll go out for a meal some time soon.

Thanks, Nick. Things are probably going to be busy over the next few weeks, but I'm sure we'll find some time to set aside.

Congratulations. I was rather shocked at the title, thinking one of your girls might have taken the plunge. What was the weather like the day you married? 9 Jan 1982? I seem to remember that that was just a week before I had my first child and there was a thick layer of ice everywhere.

Gnomon - time to move on

8 Jan 1982 was one of the worst days I ever saw, with snow up to 15 inches deep. But thankfully I got married the following year, in 1983 (this is 2011 after all).

The day was cold but pleasant - dry and sunny but still bitingly cold. And the sun set very early so we had the wedding at 2pm instead of the traditional 3pm to allow more daylight for the photographer.

January '83 for me was also very dry, but certainly cold enough you'd not wish to schedule much wedding activities. I was in my first winter in central Manitoba, and while ambient temperatures would settle in around -25C for a week, the wind chills of effectively -50C took some getting used to.

"Bitingly cold" means a different thing in Ireland from in Canada. Here it means around 0 degrees C.

Dang! - I don't know how I'm going to get used to the new 2011 thing.

Have I done my sums right by the way. I just worked out all on my own that today's date, if written 110111 is 59 in binary numbers.

110111 = 32 + 16 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 55
