That public promise will earn you an updated badge on your Personal Space (once the last kink in code gets ironed out).

If we hear nothing from you by 31 August 2012, we will assume that you are no longer active, and you will be awarded a badge for retired volunteers.

Not sure* I can claim to be active, but have made the promise anyway, well aware that the Commit and Communicate paragraph in the code tells us to check in ... on a regular basis. But then it also says "as shown on your team’s personal space" where there really isn't anything shown about that. Might be because *I* never wrote it, but, eh, well...
