(the post about 'RL conversations in English'?) It soothes my curiosity to know I could read any entry I intend to - without having to attend crash courses in a dozen other languages... how was that in the old h2g2?

Argh! No! I didn't see it.
I've got a problem with my old browser. Since the last update of h2g2, I havent been redirected back to the conversation, when I've replied to a post. And too often I just go to my conversation list. That way I miss some posts. (I will probably find them later, but...)

*You* can read them. A lot of people can't, so it's not really 'the Earth Edition', is it?
Of course we didn't start to speak "foreign" languages in the middle of a conversation (unless to make a point), but there were some places especially for it, like the Polyglot Plaza @ A271379.
And in a "private" threas in your own message centre, it's also quite fair to speak your own language, I think!

well - but now you saw it. (maybe we posted simultaneously - so you COULDN'T see without scrolling back).

You must be really busy what with all the threads you're involved in. I'll leave you now so that'll make one less to attend to.

As for the languages - as soon as you're interested in communicating over the borders of your own place you'll have to find a common language anyway - so why not English? but we can leave it at this.

OF COURSE ENGLISH!!!
But not when talking personal feelings with Titania, to give an example. If you're feeling down and has a h2g2 friend to talk with, shouldn't you be able to do that, without being - believe it or not, but it's certainly true - more stressed, because you can't express yourself good enough in this foreign language called English.

(People keep telling me that my English is very good, but still I stay out of a lot of the discusions going on, because I'm afraid to be misunderstood or just don't know how to express myself. Most of my conversations are , mostly because of that.)

I know what you mean - it happened to me in Spanish; I got just good enough to have no problems travelling - but as soon as there was a serious discussion going on all I could do was follow the main arguments - no chance whatsoever of contributing my thoughts or comments. VERY frustrating.

don't remember right now - how did DNA handle the interstellar language problem? ever mentioned it? or just assumed English would be 'nicely inconspiciuos' ?

That would be the Babel Fish...interpreted brainwave patterns and expelled them into the hosts ear, so that they heard the language as it was, but understood it automatically...
