Terran Ambassador (trying to promote continuing multilingualism on the Guide)

Greetings JLC...

This is Lady K (8), posting behind the mask of Terran Ambassador. I just now posted a new converstation (entitled "Salut!") to your U152440 page... I am guessing this was the wrong place to post...

Should I repost it here??

Looking forward to hearing from you again,
Happy Belated Epiphany,

Lady K

Dearest Lady 8,
No, I am not going to be confused with so many sites. I will try to get over there in a bit just so it is not necessary. And then reply here, I have been in the wind. First staying at the Farm, now at AnnaNorseGoddess' house. I appreciate any correspondance and will try to head to that old site and respond immediatley here.

JLC - below is the message I posted at the other site. You'll also find, at my own site, a message in reply to a message you posted long ago at the old embassy site. Here's a link to that thread: http://www.h2g2.com/F55060?thread=92498 Best wishes, Lady K (ps. if you do want to reach your old temporary site, but don't know how, I can set a link to it in this thread for you.) ~8~ Greetings JLC! It's Lady K (#8!) in the guise of Terran Ambassador here. It's been a while since we've heard from each other, and over the holiday season I wasn't keeping up with H2G2 as I'd have liked to. I hope your Holiday went well. I remember you saying something about having a home-base - or your own computer? I don't remember which! - by Christmas time. How did that turn out? You had also expressed an interest in the Tower of Babel project, which is picking up speed as we speak. It's first leg, the Terran Embassy, is being constructed, and it's coming right along. I came by specifically to tell you about a couple of sub-projects going on within the Embassy (http://www.h2g2.com/A473898). If you're still interested and have the time, we could certainly use your help. The projects both involve translating from English into whatever other languages you know. If you're interested, let me know here, or visit the Terran Ambassador user page (http://www.h2g2.com/U160465) and post to one of the forums there after you've had a look around! Thanks, good wishes, happy new year and wonderful new millennium. Looking forward to talking to you again, Lady K ~8~

Dearest Lady 8,
Great to hear from you again, your new persona,K...promoting multilinguism on the WWW is well taken and I now have a home base that can be online via DSL constantly, except in the case of thunderstorms. Anyway, I checked out the Terran Embassy and the only two languages available were French and Bubblishish. I would certainly like to help get Spanish on, as it is a major language in the Americas. How can I help? Also, why all the problems with moderation at the other embassy sites listed? Will they be resolved soon? I speak English, French and Spanish in that order of fluency. I am hoping to teach Spanish at a college level and go into the study of linguistics in the future. I have some time to help and am more interested in using my Spanish than French. Let me know how I can become involved. I also looked at the people involved Kes, Ottox, yourself, and others I have known at the h2g2 and would be honored to work with you.

Hey!!!

Great to hear from you -- I've missed everyone at the Guide while I've been away (for the school year), so it's great to have such a recent message from you!

As you can probably see, the Embassy hasn't been really up and running lately, but I hope we can pull it back into the race soon... I guess I'll need to catch up on what's changed and what's stayed the same since I took my leave of absence!!

I'd LOVE to be able to do Spanish, and any language that happens to come along. The problem, though, is that as of before I left, the Guide had gone through a bit of an upheaval, and under the BBC umbrella, had to be politically-correctified. That meant (in my rather limited understanding) no multilanguage support unless that language was covered by BBC translators working for BBC. All entries that couldn't be immediately seen to conform to BBC rules were temporarily removed, and obviously, this included non-English entries, although French seemed to stand scrutiny fairly well.

I don't know how much of that has changed, however. Just before I went away, I think German was coming back into play, as an experimental project, to see if multilanguage support was possible. The plan as I understood it was to allow more languages as (and IF) that became possible. As I said, I don't know how far that's gone, if at all... If you know anything on the subject, do let me know.

At any rate, we shall do our best!!!

Hope to keep hearing from you JLC smiley - smiley

Dearest Lady 8,
If you will let me know how I can help I will. It is great hearing from you too again. I am around and available is all I can say. I can help if you tell me how.
I hope school was good, I am a bit burned out on it for the time being and would just like to hang around like a sea turtle in the depths of the deep blue this summer. I may have to take a course though and if so, it will be on El Quixote. It is with one of my favorite profs so it wouldn't be that bad. I will know in late May.
Keep me posted on the Embassy.

Hey JLC!

Well, I haven't been around as much as I thought I'd be this summer, and so I haven't gotten to H2G2 as much as I thought I would! My connection is not a very good one, and it can be rather annoying...

School went pretty well, and I am looking forward to next year. I am burned out not on school, but on the REST of that life stuff right now. Crazy! Are you taking your El Quixote course? It sounds pretty awesome. How is it (if you're taking it!)?

I'm not sure what is, or is going to happen to the Embassy. After being away so long, I hardly know what to do with it, what needs to be done. And who is around to do it, now, especially with respect to some of the languages we had before in our "arsenal", which speakers have now drifted off the map... I'm sort of drifting myself, as you can see...

Dearest Lady 8,
Yes, I am taking my Quixote class. It is intense and I am sure I will have something to say about it. I am rather required to do a research paper MLA Style by the end of July. Great relief that the intensive course will be over on June 24th that's the final. I am burned out on school too and did not want to go this summer. I will definately be in the sun of Florida soon.
I hope to learn a lot from a friend who is a teacher of Microsoft Network Management at the University of West Florida. Onward in my quest of knowledge.
Worlds of Love,
JLCtheTTP
