It was a bit strange joining the moral right but there is a time and a place and this chap got both of those wrong. As to your other-half reading your emails, while we all love you, you are 3000+ miles away I don't think he needs to start panicking just yet. Mayby you could use a seperate webmail based account if you realy want some privacy?
