h2g2 is *huge*, and it's far more than a mere fan site about the books.

Ask h2g2 is a place to ask questions, there's a Games area if that's what you're into, The Forum is for serious debate, SEx (Science Explained) is where you can have our local scientists answer questions about pretty much everything that's of a nature to be answered scientifically, there's a Misc chat area for chat, peer review is where the Edited Guide entries are polished by the community, and then there are tons of other places that I'm forgetting to mention.

As a newbie, it's a good idea to read the backlog before contributing to threads so you can get the feel of what's going on in them and the prevailing style. That'll avoid any awkwardness, as some threads are very serious, some are totally silly, some are public free-for-alls, and others are more 'private' (as much as a conversation *can* be private on a public site.) Also, keep in mind that some threads have been going on for years and thousands of posts, so make sure you reply to the most recent posts, rather than just reading the first 20 posts, replying, and discovering that your post has zipped happily over ages of backlog.

Most important: Have fun! As you travel around you'll discover places that suit your style. The majority of us are Mostly Harmless.

An ace should be along by your space sometime in the near future with some useful links to get you started, and they usually have answers to any questions you might have. Meanwhile, if you have any specific questions I'll *try* to point you in the right direction, as best I'm able.
