Well, that's good! And it also reminds me that I have to cut Noggin's hair soon as he is starting to resemble his passport photo. smiley - winkeye

Crazy-busy last couple of days and today looks like it will be similar. Manoli is coming to sew this morning while I teach two classes. Then we're off to see Chris around 1 o'clock. Then we have to come home and cut more stuff for Toñi as she has finished her last batch of dresses.

Interesting feedback from our 'survey' but in the end we are no further ahead. All images seem to be liked/disliked in equal amounts (even though Chris didn't show yours properly, lots of people liked it). One thing we did discover is that since most people don't know what 'azahar' means they didn't get the connection between the name and the images. Even my student Montse, who is Spanish, asked - 'why an orange?' And someone else commented on your nice 'daffodil'. Gaaaaaaa! I'm almost ready to go with no image at this point.

Well, time to finish my smiley - coffee and get in the shower.

Hope you're well! smiley - smooch

I've gotta get my hair cut one of these days too. I'm looking pretty witchy again.smiley - witch

Maybe you could ask Chris to put the 'daffodil' peeking out the corner of the azahar text box like he did with the orange and the flower-power. That was a good configuration and it might work against the rest of the stuff. It was pretty lonely looking, banished way out there on the side.

Busy is good, and I'm so glad you're getting so much done! Does the airport there have a bunch of shops in it? Our bigger airports are like malls now, full of shops and restaurants. I was thinking that if you have similar you might see if you could get some of your stuff in there. I bet tourists to Seville would buy it--it's perfect touristing clothing, and if you printed a nice tag that briefly explained the meaning of azahar, the connection with Seville, and that it's locally hand-made, natural clothing I *bet* it would sell.

Well, head is spinning after a couple of hours with Chris. At least he can now go ahead with the general page set-up as we confirmed the text logo, colours, layout, etc. But still no decision about the logo image, so we're going to take a rest from it for a few days I think.

In any case, he did convince us that a white logo image would not work, so it looks like we won't be using yours for this reason smiley - sorry .

Meanwhile, I didn't much like the 'flower power' one and although I liked the orange we ended up deciding it wasn't appropriate for clothing. Gaaaaaaaa.

Anyhoodle, I have enough to keep me busy all weekend now without worrying about the logo image. And as I say, now that we have agreed to certain other things on the page, Chris can go ahead with the essential stuff over the next week or so.

Well, back to pattern grading and cutting. Which is pretty much what I am going to be doing ALL WEEKEND. smiley - disco

Just wanted to remember this moment. It's Friday around 7pm. Manoli won't be back to sew until Tuesday so we've got both the tables in Lua's room raised to cutting height. Noggin has just gone off to teach a class. I'm here surrounded by pattern paper, pencils, rulers, scissors, etc . . . the radio is on . . . the laptop is next to me . . . it's cosily warm in here because the room is so small that the space heater heats it up in no time . . .

I just finished grading the crop-top pattern, now going to do the 'dressing gown' one (the one I'm wearing over the fairy dress in the goddess pic) as these are the two garments we promised for Toñi on Sunday, so we'll be cutting them tomorrow. And I dunno . . .

It all feels so 'right'. I mean, if twenty years ago I could have seen a film of me doing this right now I would have been amazed! Well, okay, and possibly a bit disappointed it took twenty years to get here smiley - winkeye but it's at least a part of the work I've always wanted to be involved with. And I am finally doing it.

Anyhow, just felt like sharing that with you. I thought you would 'get it' somehow . . .

Now, back to work! smiley - run

I call those moments 'Goldilocks moments'. It's great when you're suddenly *right there*, and you look around you and everything is a part of what you've been working for and dreaming of. You've tried the papa bear stuff, and it was too hard. And you've tried the mama bear stuff, and it was too bland. And then you try the baby bear stuff, and it's juuuuuust riiiiiiight!

I think it's good to keep those moments somewhere so you don't forget, and it's best to have a friend to share them with. smiley - smiley Thanks for sharing that one with me.

Goldilocks moments - like it! smiley - ok

Mind you, if I'd seen that 'film' of me twenty years ago I would have been shocked and appalled at my FATNESS. In fact, about ten years ago I had a very vivid dream about waking up FAT and OLD and PUFFY and thinking - 'oh-my-gawd, what has happened to me, I can't possibly go out looking like this' - and in fact I think I now look like that scary dream image. smiley - yikes

Interesting thing about the pattern drafting. I'm really not a qualified pattern-maker, though I know some basic stuff. I mean, I know enough to do my first samples in a basic medium size. But drafting the production patterns to fit the size chart I've come up with is taking a lot of WORK and I often feel like I'm winging it, going on instinct . . . eek!

We have checked out a few places that offer professional production pattern making services but they cost a fortune! About a hundred euros for the first pattern, then about thirty euros for each size grading. Just imagine what that would cost with having twenty styles!

Meanwhile, we also found someone who said she could make me some 'basic block' patterns for cheaper. About 35 euros for the first one and 18 euros for each size grading (in my case, three other sizes). So if I have her do 'body' and 'trouser' blocks to my specifications, with my ease and seam allowances built in, this would help a lot. With the 'body' block I could do tops and dresses, with the 'trouser' block I could also do skirts. And I will probably also need a basic sleeve block (I'm totally crap at sleeves!). But even if we hire her next week I won't have the blocks in time to help with this production, so it's a lot of trial and error for now.

BUT, I *do* like this work. It's very mathematical and precise. I like having my pencils out, *my* paper (I'm still so thrilled that I managed to find it!), my various rulers (curved and straight) and also various coloured pens (I'm colour-coding my sizes). . . somehow I really feel like *me* when I'm doing this work. All I need are more exact guidelines to follow so that I'm not 'reinventing the wheel' each time I draft a pattern - you know what I mean? With the basic blocks I will be able to trace out the basic shape and then manipulate it to fit my styling. Which is really what all designers I've ever worked with do.

I used to have a set of pattern blocks but even if I still had them they wouldn't specifically fit the size chart I'm working with now, so getting new ones made up seems quite fundamental.

Anyhow, it's been interesting to discover that I quite enjoy this part of the process. As you know, I *totally hate* sewing, but I'm also finding out that I actually sew just as well, if not better, than the sewers I've hired. Years ago my friend Patricia (designer and pattern-maker extraordinaire - for awhile I was taking pattern-making classes with her) complimented me on how perfectly sewn all my samples were - and I thanked her but also said I sweated blood over practically every stitch! And that's the truth!

I also thought I was the *slowest sewer in the entire universe* but it turns out that Toñi also sews as slowly as I do. Meanwhile, during my time working with various designers in Toronto, I did meet amazing sample sewers who could whip up a garment - PERFECTLY - in half the time I could. So I know it's possible to do it faster and better than I can.

Anyhow, what all this means is that I've had to put up the price I'm paying for getting some garments made - to keep my sewers happy. Which eats away at our profit margin, which is not all that huge considering the price of the linen and especially some of the trim I'm using. In any case, the only 'profit' I want and need right now is enough to be able to buy the next batch of production materials, so that it is here and ready to go once we go 'live' - so we can immediately replace things that are sold, so we have continuous stock happening.

Very happily found out this week that our linen supplier is now going to give us 90 days to pay so we have now ordered the next batch (takes six weeks for them to produce and deliver it). But we'll still have to pay for the expensive trim C.O.D.

Ramble, ramble, ramble . . .

Meanwhile, it looks like Noggin is going to have his ear operation on March 2 - his birthday! We had wanted it done sooner but the doctor is going to be away on holiday. So, just when we 'go live' Noggin will be incapacitated for a week or two. Anyhow, I'd still like him to get a second opinion before the op, just to be sure. My friend/student Montse, a physicist who works at the general hospital, says you should be wary about private insurance doctors recommending operations. Also, there is *something* about this doctor that I just don't trust - can't put my finger on it. So I think a second opinion wouldn't be a bad idea.

Anyhow, I hope you don't feel badly about us not using your flower logo. It's more about the colour than the flower itself - I really love the flower. But we are not just hiring Chris to design our website - we also want and need his opinions on 'sites that work' as he has created some quite wonderful stuff (of course we've seen his portfolio). And he isn't about making 'lowest common denominator' market stuff at all - a lot of his pages are very artistic and even quite challenging. And he does have a good eye for colour.

We had a very good meeting with him yesterday. Funny that he can come across in emails as being a bit arrogant, but in person, with his open face and ready laugh, you get a whole other feeling. And it was neat going to his house - made me feel more confident about him somehow. His house is fabulous! Meaning that it somehow reflected his personality (though no doubt also his wife's). Very clean and artistic looking place, nice colours, bits of interesting this-and-that.

And so he made us coffee and took us upstairs to his workroom - and once we started working together the time just flew by. I'd noticed this about him before - when he came to our place to first talk about stuff. Once he starts getting into stuff he will just spend HOURS - he is very enthusiastic about his work and also loves 'idea sharing' stuff.

As I said yesterday, whilst looking for something else we accidently came across a flower image that made me go - 'Oh, what was that?' And suddenly all three of us got quite excited about it. Kind of a 'backlit' overlapping flower image - and weirdly, the overlapping bits looked just like an orange blossom, but it ended up looking like an orange blossom within a glowing transparent orangy sun image, if that makes sense. Anyhow, he is going to work on that and send us a 'cleaned up' version (he just did a quick photoshop copy of it while we were there) for us to look at. But it's orangy and fire-y and quite nice, I think. Well, we shall see . . .

Meanwhile, I think this is the longest post I've ever posted. It will probably put me on that h2g2 statistics page of the longest post posted in the last 24 hours. smiley - biggrin

As always, many thanks for being there, and for always listening. It means the world to me. smiley - smooch

Hmmmmm. Seems to me that maybe you might look into enrolling in a pattern-blocking class at that design school, if possible. Probably wouldn't end up costing much more than paying someone to do it for you, and then you'd always be able to do it yourself as needed. Also, you'd be able to get expert help and advice in coming up with the first ones, 'for free'.

I'm not bothered about you not using my flower, had fun making it and I'll probably do something else with it, maybe make something for my mom from it. She loves flowers, keeps kinda hinting that she'd like to have me do a painting for her, but my painting 'style' definitely doesn't work for her. Maybe I'll blow that flower up and use it as a stencil for a smallish painting for mom, work with subtle colors in the oil pastels to give it some depth and texture. It wasn't a waste of time to make it, sometimes things just go in directions you hadn't expected, ya know?

Lots of good stuff coming up this week, tonight I'll be going to a Blues festival after work with Jeff and some of his friends, then Flamenco Ballet on the 14th and Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra on the 15th. I've got 9 tickets for the flamenco, and since that's my day off and it's Valentine's Day I'm thinking about organizing a sunset picnic on the beach before the show. I can tell everyone to bring some wine or hors d'oeuvres since restaurants are always too busy on that night, you never seem to have a great experience. The show doesn't start til 9, so we'll have plenty of time as the theater is only about 2-3 blocks from the beach.

Nah, pattern-making class would require more time than I have available at the moment. This was why I was doing pattern-making classes with Patricia a few years ago - because paying her for a class that taught me how to do stuff was actually cheaper than just hiring her to make the patterns for me. And I learned a lot with her, doing it that way.

Anyhow, I'm actually quite good at pattern-making, as it turns out. I just need those blocks. Once I have the blocks - made exactly to my specifications - then I'll have them forever.

Hey, it ain't rocket science! But it does require knowing from which point to make the changes. Sleeves still drive me totally mental even though Patricia very patiently explained sleeves to me once, many years ago. I still don't get them!

Flamenco ballet? Cristina Hoyas, perchance? I once saw an amazing flamenco ballet performance here performed by her dance company.

Blues festival - who are you seeing?

Having once been a 'blues baby' I tend to be a bit of a snob when it comes to blues musicians, but then again, what do I know?

To be honest, lots of blues bores me to tears, then other stuff leads to tears . . . just the beauty of it. And I'm never sure why. Or, why the difference. I just knows it when I hears it . . .

Ya know?

Slept in sinfully late, the bluesfest was ok, fun but not great, and we went to an afterparty at Alligator Alley to see another blues show, but that was a disappointment. And then I started talking politics with Jeff, learned that his brain has been almost completely consumed by faux news terror tactics, so that was disturbing as well. *sigh* Full moons are like that sometimes.

Sorry I missed you yesterday. I was having lunch when you pinged me and only saw the messages as I was on my way out the door. Seriously HAD to get out for an hour for some fresh air and stretch my legs (after cutting since 9am) so we went out for a walk and bought the Sunday paper - *and* another Cirque du Soleil dvd. Then back home to finish cutting . . .

I ended up tying up the last bundle of garments just five minutes before Toñi showed up (at 8.30). Anyhow, she now has work for the next week or so. Turns out she is only working with me now - she isn't taking in any other work. Says she's had offers to do some other things but that my stuff looks more promising as regular long-term work so . . . smiley - wow

Meanwhile, must get the rest of the patterns graded and cut the next stuff for Manoli and Ana Mari. But not today. Today I have three classes in the morning and two in the evening so that kind of fills up the day.

One thing I *must* remember is to make time for The Bike. I mean, it's only half an hour a day. And I want to extend that to an hour to include some weight work, abs and stretching. I also have to make sure I get out for at least an hour a day - a couple of days last week I got so busy that I didn't go out at all, and that didn't feel good. It's damn cold here, wearing sweats and a beret in the apartment, candles burning all over the place and even a pot of water boiling on the stove, and it's *still* feeling cold. There's a freeze warning for tonight, will have to pull all my garden back towards the apartment wall and cover them up so they don't die. Shouldn't complain, though. It's been an exceptionally mild winter with little bops of cool-enough-for-a-jacket surrounded by 70sF.

Rant o' the day on US governmental incompetence: smiley - steam

6 months after hurricane Katrina there are still 20-some thousand displaced people living in hotels around the country at taxpayer expense. This week they shall be evicted by National Guard, at gunpoint if necessary. Meanwhile, 11,000 empty trailers have been sitting at an airport (in Arkansas, I think) waiting for somebody to figure out where they need to be placed. Government is paying the town substancial dollars for 'storage fees'. Saw news clip of this airport, it's damn amazing how much space these things take up. Gaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Obviously, they can't all go to one place, and no town wants to be turned into a permanent FEMA trailer park (including New Orleans) but shit, what another example of stupidity, incompetence, waste of resources and politics taking precedence over creating solutions. smiley - grr I'd like to slap my collective government upside the head.

First day of Spring sounds like a good time to launch. Honey, what callendar are you looking at? Mine shows Spring beginning on Monday, Mar 20. I was just gonna say that I'll be there for your launch date, then I looked at my callendar as I didn't *think* I was traveling on a weekend.

Today got me worried a bit. I'd been thinking this arctic weather would be a trial run for what it was likely to feel like in the UK when I'm there. I happened to have a couple of customers from London, the woman was wearing a lacy sundress and her husband was very lightly dressed, too. They kinda stuck out since all the locals were in their furs, hats, scarves, boots, big, bulky stuff. smiley - laugh So I asked if today's weather was about what I should expect for my vacation time, and they said it might get *very* cold, or it might be warmer, but it certainly wouldn't be *hot* like this afternoon, and in the northern bits I could pretty much count on it being cold! I'm gonna diiiiiie! smiley - yikes I'll be a Brittasicle! It might make me frigid (not that my oh-so-active lovelife would know any difference. Humph.) I shall have to take to nipping on whiskey smiley - yuk just to keep my blood from freezing in my veins. Only one good thing about desperate-cold weather: my hair behaves. But it won't matter because I'll be all bundled up like a woman in a burkah, so nobody will be able to see anything of me but my runny nose and glassy eyes. And even today I kept getting static shocks when I touched things and my clothes were sticking to me.smiley - yuk Ooooooohhhhhhh. smiley - cry

I must go drown my fears in a hot toddy, get in training or I'll be useless as tits on a snake when I emerge into the bitter North.

<>

Well, 'desperate-cold weather' in the UK is often accompanied by 'mucho humidad', so not sure how your hair will behave under those conditions. But a jaunty beret should not only keep your head warm but also help keep The Hair under control. smiley - towel

Meanwhile, I shall take this opportunity to go: GAAAAAAAAA!!!

My third sewer Manoli had taken all the short flippy skirts home over the weekend to sew up all the seams. She returned this morning to serge the seams and do the top-stitching. And everything was going just fine until, after she'd finished top-stitching about four or five skirts, I had a quick look to make sure they were turning out okay and GAAAAAAAAA!!! Totally wonky all-over-the-place topstitching! I mean . . . WTF? I had even showed her how to set up my machine so that all she had to do was line up the seam with a line in the middle of the pressure foot - for foolproof and exact top-stitching. smiley - headhurts

Anyhow . . . I had to tell her that the skirts with the wonky top-stitching were of no use to me, that there was no way I could sell them like that. And frankly, to rip out all the top-stitching and start over (six panels per skirt) was more work than just starting over from scratch. Though this is probably what I'll end up doing myself so as not to lose any more fabric.

Final outcome - Manoli left in a huff complaining about ALL THE WORK she had done so far that she wasn't going to get paid for now. I countered that I had just lost five skirts and gave silent thanks to the other Manoli (my 'grandmother') who had advised me NOT to pay sewers by the hour but by the completed garment - and *only then* if the garment was finished to my specifications.

I mean, I do feel badly for the second Manoli. But our agreement from the beginning (same agreement I have with Toñi and Ana Mari) was that I would pay her after all the skirts were finished and finished well.

I hope this isn't going to set back our first of spring opening date as I had been counting on Manoli to do some of the easier stuff here while Toñi did the other stuff at home. Because I think that after Ana Mari finishes the one style she has at home right now (that I hope and pray turns out well!) that she won't be available for more work now until May.

Meanwhile, thank gawd for Toñi! She just called me as there was a problem with some of the bias facings I'd cut for the crop top - apparently too short for one of the sizes! But after a few minutes talking it over on the phone we came up with a reasonable solution. She is so great! Reliable, responsible and, as I said before, very keen on being MY EXCLUSIVE SEWER for the line. Well, and later on sharing the work with her friend Ana Mari.

So now, time for me to get smiley - zen and do what I do best, which is problem solve and organise. Also need to figure out if we should 'go live' with only a few styles or put off the date until Toñi can get more stuff finished.

Still doing my best to smiley - disco . . .

Flamenco ballet tonight was good though it started kinda shakey. The first dance the troupe seemed way out of sync, timing and movements were off, one pair of dancers even accidentally bumped into and bounced off each other, I guess somebody went the wrong way. After that they got it together and the guys were wonderful. I'm finding that I generally prefer male flamenco dancers once I get accustomed to the way they preen. I almost started on a laughing jag, had that blue-footed boobie mating strut pop into my head at an inopportune moment. The band was good too, very energetic.

Another disappointment with people, though. Maybe today I'm hormonal and oversensitive, but 5 of the 8 people I gave tickets to, who *definitely* wanted to come, couldn't be bothered. I think from now on I'll only ask for 4 tickets, give them to the people who always make it if they say they will, and not bother with inviting new people. It's not worth the hassle, and I feel bad when I have a bunch of empty seats because it's standard here for "something came up" to be an acceptable excuse when I call to let them know where I am, waiting for them. I'M SO SICK OF MIAMI! grumble grumble I don't know how these people manage to do *anything* in an organized fashion. Oh--that's right, they DON'T. Silly me, for expecting anything else from the majority of them. That's why I can't wait to get out of here though I shall miss the shows.

I wonder what happens when a cosmetina goes postal... do we use mascara wands as a weapon of minor destruction and poke all the inconsiderate idiot's eyes out? They might drive more safely that way. Humph. At least they'd have an excuse. Do we gather an arsenal of lipsticks that still have lead in 'em and force-feed 'em to Violators of Consideration till they shit bucketloads of red dye No3?

I'm still anal and bitchy today, decided to manage the small irritants that were in my control rather than grumple about them all day. So I shampood all the filthy makeup brushes that were where I was working, put away some stock that's been left sitting in boxes in the stockroom rather than out where it was needed, generally cleaned the testers (this is the filthiest, most disorganized CHANEL counter I've seen, anywhere, and I warned my coworkers that I was evil today and to stop me if my grumpling became a downer for them. I guess I was ok, because nobody had to 'give me the hand'. smiley - ok

Decided against going to the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra tonight because I was out-of-sorts and I'd given my neighbor who fixed the broken window on my truck 4 tickets to share with his wife and friends, so I didn't want them to feel obligated to interact with bitchy ol' me since my other friend who was to come had to cancel. She had a good reason and told me early this morning, so she's not banished to the Violators of Consideration ranks. smiley - laugh

PMS, eh? I've never known if I suffer from that. I think I am so wired and weird all the time that I wouldn't know the difference. So maybe I won't notice menopause either since I no longer have periods.

Right . . . time for a nice hot shower and then bed.

Buenas noches . . .

smiley - sleepy azzzzzz
