Did you know that a search for "h2g2" on Google ranks your pals page top?

The h2g2 site itself is nowhere to be seen, except for links to it from Wikipedia, BBC News, BBCi and Cult Talk Buffy, etc.

I didn't know, but it doesn't surprise me.

I tend to agressively keyword my pages, which helps on search engines. contrast this with your typical frames based or generated site, which has no keywording, and it can help a lot.

Cooooooo...

I like the way you've included "freinds" in your keywords along with the correct spelling (forward thinking there - although Google will correct users who type it wrong anyway).

I'm doing a course in Information Retrieval at the moment, so I know about Google and stuff. Whilst the keywords thing will get you ranked highly on other search engines, Google's PageRank system ranks pages almost completely on their popularity. You could have been marked as a "hub" by linking out to many websites which are marked as "authorities", but it is more likely that you have been marked an "authority" yourself, by having lots of websites linking in to your page. smiley - smiley

possibly, but it is likely that the more than 1000 different sites I link to (see http://www.xyroth-enterprises.co.uk/http.htm for a list) helps a lot, as does links to places like http://www.zyra.org.uk/sindex.htm (the site index for zyra's website has to be seen to be believed).

also, as I manage a number of sites, I reciprocally link to them and they link to me, as do some of those on some of the pals pages on my site.

this all helps to improve rankings.

ps any idea if having a lot of links on a page gets you marked down, and if so, what the critical limit tends to be?
