Hi Babel-17,
I spotted your name and had to come on over and say hello because you've called yourself after one of my favourite books. I recently rediscovered it and reread it in an afternoon. It definitely hasn't lost it's appeal over the years.
I've always assumed that both Sam Delaney and DNA used "Babel" because of the Tower of Babel fable, which as you no doubt remember involved a monolingual nation getting above themselves and being punished by multiple language creation dividing their society. But it wouldn't surprise me if DNA had read Sam Delaney before writing Hitchhiker.

It's only taken me about 10 days to think of it.
After wracking my brain continually, and deciding to give up for a while, I was driving home in my car, feeling sorry for myself as I was just getting into full swing with the cold I currently have, and then Bamm! When I got home, i dug out the book and skim read it.
decision made.
And you are probably right with the Tower of Babel theory, but I still like my idea.
