OK, so I'm back
Posted Oct 20, 2011
For a long time, I've been only semi-engaged, if that, with h2g2. As I stated somewhere at the time of the sale, I may not come here often, but at least now I'll know it's still there for me not to go to.
Well, you know what? Having seen all the hard work a lot of people put in to keep the site going, I decided to re-engage on the relaunch. So I've ventured about parts of the site which aren't the Atelier or my friends' journals, I've read the Post, I've re-subscribed to ask for the first time in years, I've started reading the entries in Peer Review again, I'm relaunching the Fantasy Football Predictions competition that has been dormant since 2008. And I'm keeping up with conversations in the Atelier rather than just hitting the backlog once in a while.
Partly this re-engagement is because of the relaunch, but partly it's because of an overwhelming sense of nostalgia. I turned 30 last month, and spent a week in The North East, revisiting my student days at the University of Sunderland, amongst other things. And wandering around Sunderland, I missed my University days. And a large part of those university days was nights in the library, putting off writing essays by surfing hootoo. I can't do all the things I did at 20 now, but this is one that I can.
To quote one of the great thinkers of our time, 'I'm back, baby!'

The future of h2g2
Posted Jun 21, 2011
I see there has been a successful bid fort he site, and it includes the community consortium, along with Robbie Stamp (one of the founding fathers) and a company called Noesis Systems. Congratulation to all involved.

Lists: Baseball
Posted May 8, 2011
My latest trip to America has increased my list of baseball matches I've been to, and the number of ballparks I've been to, each by two.
The list:
2006:
Shea Stadium: Mets v Cardinals (x2)
US Cellular Field: White Sox v Twins
2007:
Yankee Stadium: Yankees v Mariners (x2)
2008:
Citizens Bank Park: Phillies v Reds (x2)
Shea Stadium: Mets v Nationals
2009:
KeySpan Park: Brooklyn Cyclones v Lowell Spinners
2010:
Nationals Park: Nationals v Phillies
New Yankee Stadium: Yankees v Red Sox
2011:
Turner Field: Braves v Cardinals
AT&T Park: Chattanooga Lookouts v Jackson Generals
I also added a new venue to my football (soccer) list, as I watched a pre-season friendly at Finley Stadium between Chattanooga FC, reigning champions of the NPSL Southeast Division, and local amateur team Dalton AllStars

The Independent
Posted Sep 13, 2010
I stopped reading the Independent newspaper about three or so years ago, on account of it's descending into the gutter at a decent rate. I don't miss much about it, but I do feel a slight gap in my life where Robert Fisk used to be.
His piece on the 9/11 anniversary (linked by Gosho in Hypatia's thread on the same subject) reminded me why.
