Not sure where this fits in to the threads on h2g2c2, I haven't been able to keep up with them but I think it's important to try and build up researchers' faith in the longevity / security of content contributed.
I suppose there's two ways of tackling it - either keeping up with the latest style, fashion, technology (just been reading how much Myspace is losing out to Facebook and Youtube) or by having quantites of original quality archived content. Perhaps both is possible? My gut feeling is that the former is a hare and the latter is a tortoise, is a hartoise possible?
I naively thought what a fantastic store of stuff would be built up on the wwww but it's changed, geocities gone for instance and all those fascinating personal websites with it.
Anyway, many thanks to the consortium for what you're all putting into securing h2g2's future.

Good point very well made, Waz. I guess we were naive in trusting the Beeb to store everything forever.
Have you found the Great Big Document, by the way? It's due for a refresh this evening, but it's the summary of where the community's thinking has got to on each of the relevant subjects.

No, I haven't, the link takes me to a page asking me to log in to a google account.
I was reluctant to register with google up to last week, this week I'm even more reluctant after we had two extrememly convincing fraudulent emails at work that came via googlemail connections. Really convincing, written individually and appropriately to the people they pretended to come from.
I would like to read the document though. Am I being too Luddite?

There's 2.2 Mb of it

Thanks Pin, that would be good.
The email's still the same - been enough hassel changing names on everything else. Still haven't actually got through all it in fact. It's not what I class as an interesting activity.

Nearly as much fun as a census return
(Shh. Don't tell 'em I said that)

I could have great fun with the census return, but don't want S chucked in the clink .
Read it, and Wow! at the work gone in which is very impressive, but also the hole on p42 is a real problem isn't it?
Ben, has any more happened there, or is anything underway?

I'm working on the collection right now. It's coming together, the permissions thing is the challenge. I'm hoping to get a long list of entries I've asked for finished later today and then "all" I need to do is hope that people get back to me.
THEN.... I'll be back on the Great Big Document.
All work and no play is making Ben an extremely dull girl.
Key: Complain about this post
