... kind of depends if you really make use of them, and also which way we want to use them in the future... Most people know in a general sense, I'm sure, but to put it in a few concise words? I fail.
About the skins - just mention that they are skins, and make a bigger one about
Skin - user selected way of displaying the content of h2g2; colour schemes, graphics and layout of the pages differ between the skins, but the content is basically the same. Some shortcuts and details may differ slightly.
No real point in defining what each skin is.

That said, It took Wordpress about five years to work out they needed Tags as well as Categories. 
Skin - a way of presenting the look, feel an functionality of a website without changing the underlying content. The original h2g2 skin was Classic Goo and the site is also available in Plain, Alabaster and Brunel. The new look - called Barlesque - also changes the functionality and is a Platform not a Skin.

(That's why there has been so many problems, Milla. They have attempted to write something from scratch that works a bit like h2g2 but fits in with BBCiD too.)
