bombing in union st blackfriars
I USED TO WORK FOR A COMPANY CALLED "WILDER INSRUMENT COMPANY" WHICH WAS SITUATED IN UNION STREET BLACKFRIARS LONDON,JUST ACROSS THE ROAD FROM WHERE THE OLD SOUTH LONDON BOXING RING USED TO BE.I CAN REMEMBER TRYING TO GET TO WORK ON THE TUESDAY AFTER EASTER 1944,ONLY TO FIND OUR FIRM DID NOT EXIST ANY MORE,IT HAD BEEN DEMOLISHED BY A BOMB SOMETIME DURING EASTER,BUT AS WE WERE INVOLVED IN IMPORTANT WAR EFFORT(MAKING INSTRUMENTS FOR THE NAVY AND AIRFORCE)WE WERE SOON FOUND A NEW HOME IN TOOLY STREET IN AN EMPTY WAREHOUSE.THE BUILDING IN UNION ST WAS TYPICAL OF THE FRAGILE WAY THEY CONSTRUCTED THESE MULTI STORY BUILDINGS OF YEARS AGO, AS A PUFF OF WIND AND THEY WOULD COLLAPSE AND ALTHOUGH WE NEVER HAD A DIRECT HIT IT STILL FELL DOWN KILLING THE FIREWATCHERS.I BELIEVE THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME THIS VERY SPOT HAD BEEN HIT,THE FIRST ONE EARLIER ON IN THE WAR HAD DEMOLISHED THE OLD BOXING RING,THUS THE SPOT WAS USED TO BUILD A LARGE WATER TANK TO FIGHT INCENDIARY BOMBS.I ALSO WAS WORKING FOR THIS COMPANY DURING THE DOODLEBUG PERIOD,AND IT WAS MY JOB TO POSITION MYSELF ON THE ROOF AND LOOK OUT FOR THESE CURSED THINGS(I WAS YOUNG HAD GOOD EARS AND EYESIGHT)AND ONE OF THE FEW MALES ON THE STAFF AND EXPENDABLE !!!.
