Warren Mitchell smiley - sadface
http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-34820371

He'll be forever known as Alf Garnett, naturally, but he was always showing up in British films and television series, notably The Avengers and Danger Man, and a small part as a Jewish tailor in Two Way Stretch (he was actually of Jewish descent, it says here).

But let's not forget him too as Bamber in Jack Rosenthal's The Chain, explaining how moving causes "upsetment" smiley - bigeyes

I remember he also starred in an obscure, short-running comedy in the early '90s about an old London guy who moves to Belfast during the Troubles. I can't remember an awful lot about it, or if it was even any good, but I wouldn't mind watching it again.

Would that be 'So You Think You've Got Troubles'? I've never seen that.

Yes, that's the one! I think it must have just run for one series.

I've a feeling Dervla Kirwan was in it too.

For a short while, in the early 90s, I lived just around the corner from Cynthia's, er, place of business in Ambleside Avenue, Streatham (or St. Reatham if you prefer). This was some time after it had ceased trading, unfortunately smiley - tongueout

I wonder if I have a copy of Personal Services to hand. I should like to watch that now.

I couldn't begin to list all the productions I've seen him in over the years, but two which spring immediately to mind are both among the list of my favourite films - A Passage to India and The Man Who Would Be King.

Both of which I do have copies of smiley - ok

I think he was in an episode of Minder too smiley - biggrin

The video on that page is well worth watching, if you're of a certain age and names like John Snagge, Alvar Lidell and Brian Johnston make you go misty-eyed smiley - bigeyes

He was superb as Toby Meres in Callan. I don't know why he didn't continue in the role after (I think it was) series two, but Patrick Mower was a bit low wattage as his replacement, James Cross.

Shirley Stelfox
http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-35039710

I'll be honest - I'm not that familiar with her work. I know I've seen her in various productions but I couldn't name any of them. What I know her most for is her name - Stelfox. Despite it being an uncommon one, I met a girl with the same name when I was a teenager. I've no idea if the were related in any way - it was a holiday fling smiley - bigeyes

As well as that though, she was Don Henderson's missus.

Meadowlark Lemon
http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/12/28/461258599/meadowlark-lemon-star-of-the-harlem-globetrotters-dies

Ah, I remember seeing the Harlem Globetrotters on TV each year when they came to the UK. It was something to look forward to and Meadowlark was pretty much a household name back then. And then one year I actually got to see them at (what was then called) The Empire Pool, Wembley smiley - bigeyes Even though I'd already seen all the routines, it was a fantastic experience smiley - biggrin

My dad met the man who's position, center, Meadowlark later took over. (Name escapes me at the moment.)

The arena was SRO but they made room on their bench for my dad when he was a kid.

I find this hard to believe. I thought the bloke was indestructible. I find it even harder to believe Keith Richards outlived him.

I also find it hard to believe Keith Richards is alive.

When I first saw this (just a few minutes ago) my first reaction is to find confirmation as Lemmy's death has been repeatedly reported. I looked for confirmation and all the top news sources on my Google search looked really questionable. But now it's on the BBC, so I'll accept it.

Maybe now will find out who would win in a fit, Lemmy or God.

I was wondering if it was true, as you were, especially as it took a while for my trusted sources (including the BBC) to publish it.

They didn't play one of their songs, though.

I saw the Globetrotters at Wembley too, back in the 70s. What a lot of fun they were. And there was an animated series about them too, in the early 70s. We used to love that.
