Mercaptan. My dad told me tales of his youth that involved that smelly stuff. In high school, he had a part time job at the local cinema. His father worked at one of the refineries that make Texas City [in]famous. His friends, mostly hot-rodders, often relied on him to give them an advantage on the local police. My dad knew the routine of the officer they most often ran into trouble with and would lie in wait in a vent over an alley behind the theater. He was armed with a water gun... filled with mercaptan. A few sprits on the back of the officer would give anyone downwind of him plenty of notice. Of course, anyone downwind of my father would also get plenty of notice as mercaptan is also a bit of a solvent so his water gun would leak profusely.
