Who is this bloke? I don't believe I've ever seen or heard of him before today. I am a bit of a dinosaur though.

I'm sure I've talked about him before. Look him up http://www.youtube.com/timminchin and http://www.youtube.com/timminchinlive. Good songs to start with are Rock 'n' Roll Nerd, Taboo/Prejudice, and his perverted love songs (Inflatable You, If You Really Loved Me, You Grew on Me, Drowned, and If I Didn't Have You (the versions without the skit on If I Was a Rich Man are, in my opinion, better, but that might be just my taste)). The Good Book is another excellent one. But I could go on all day. And might.

He's very very funny and also very very clever. And I can sum up my philosophy by referring to two of his songs: Storm and White Wine in the Sun. (Apparently at one of his concerts he played Ten Foot Cock and a Few Hundred Virgins and then, immediately afterwards, played White Wine in the Sun, which is an interesting contrast.)
He's also an insanely talented musician, which is seen most in Dark Side, some versions of Peace Anthem for Palestine, and F-Sharp.
And there are more references to him on Pharyngula than I care to count.
