Maybe one or two. I think the look of the plant would be spoiled if you took off too many. Personally I'd leave it be. Even though the small ones have roots I don't think there's anything in nature that would cause them to come off and be moved away to become an entirely new plant, they just kind of grow like that. There are some succulents that grow small plantlets on their leaves just for the purpose of falling off and becoming a new plant.

Just tried to ask my wife in what way it was good for the human body, she tried to talk about modern tech 'machines giving off bad stuff , and the Cacti absorbing bad waves, no she just couldn't get it out in english, if you haven't heard anything then this is garbage talk , I still like the plant so will still get it I think. The plant itself is a cluster of branches up to about five feet tall arm thickness star shaped and no real spikes smiley - erm

Ah, yes. That's some kind of cereus, probably Cereus peruvianus. I'd repot that as soon as you get it home and put it in a pot or container much bigger. The poor thing looks like it has next to no soil in that one. You might also find that it's more than one plant. They don't usually grow like that so sellers put several together to make it look... 'nice'. In a natural state they'll grow more than one column, but not as close together as that http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/67/Cereus-peruvians2.jpg
