Electronica Worth Listening to.
Electronica is music created through entirely electronic means. It usually crosses or destroys the boundaries of musical styles. It usually blurs emotional content - smearing joy into desolation into rage into ...
Herein, I will discuss my absolute favorite groups; 808 State, The Future Sound of London, and Orbital; and give reasons why I consider them to be worth listening to.
808 State - The original delerium inducers! 808 haven't put out an album in a couple of years, but I hear one is forthcoming, and they're always worth the wait.
Orbital - Orbital consist of two brothers, Paul and Phil Hartnoll (hereafter refered to as P+P). They hail form Merry Olde Englande - as do most of the groups I'll be discussing for some reason. If you want to find the specifics of their lives, just ask below, where you can have all your answers questioned. The thing that makes their music so great is the sheer entrancement of it all. They create an internal world where one sees the rhythms and loops.
The only time I could cry over my mother's death was upon hearing "The Girl with the Sun in her Head" which was composed by P+P upon the death of Sally Harding - a photographer friend of theirs. It starts with a slow throb that resembles breathing as if heard from within the body, then P+P layer further beats and loops until there is this assault of beauty where it's impossible to actually follow all the loops at once. P+P show us, not in lyrics, but through the emotional content of sound what Sally gave to them during the time they knew her and how they miss her.
Orbital have a very distictive style that doesn't quite sound like anyone else, much like Mozart is recognizable from Bach and The Doors are recognizable from Led Zeppelin. They may use the same instruments as other electronica groups, but the creative forces the two brothers bring to their work puts them far above the genre of "dance" or "techno" music- they make just good music, period.
Recommendations to sample: Chime (their first single), Halcyon+On+On (the first tune that truly showed their brilliance), Lush (any mix), The Box, and the aforementioned The Girl With the Sun in Her Head.
