Inanna has a theory - it could be bunnies.

Following your kind words on my depression article, I figured I'd stop by and say "hey". Whereabouts in South Africa are you? I used to live in Jo'burg many years ago - back when the state of emergency was still in operation, and so on. 1987 I guess was when I left. I worked for Black Sash and for another anti-apartheid organisation called Wilgespruit out in Roodeport. I'd love to go back some time and see how the country has changed since then.

Anyway, I'm off to immerse myself in your articles and learn more about all the nice south african mammals. And reminisce about vacations we took in the Kruger, and in Hluhluwe, and other reserves.

Peace,

Inanna

Sad, Mad or Bad? - I always wanted to be a dino, but alas, I'm just old.

I was thinking of introducing you two, because I thought you might get on very well. Once again, Kiry, you beat me to it! smiley - hug

smiley - blue, smiley - steam or smiley - devil

The Unmentionable Marauding Pillowcase

Hi, Inanna. I live in Pietersburg, way up north close to the Zim border. Over here it's going quite well - there has never been many problems over here, race relations are good, the city is growing, general prosperity is increasing. We have problems, but we'll sort them out. In some other places, though, there are more serious matters. Gauteng (the old PWV areas) is experiencing a massive crime wave: an epidemic of carjackings. Even prominent TV people and politicians are getting hit.

I'm also interested in what goes on in other African countries. Many of my animal entries are of more northerly creatures. Speaking that, did you hear what happened to Prez Kabila of the Congo? Seems he was a victim of an assasination attempt, at present we don't know yet if it was successful or not.

I'm a bit disgusted with politics, because it seems to me the same old ancient formulas are tried again and again and again even when it's clear as day that they don't work and have in fact never worked. I'm for transformation - global social transformation, the complete overhaul of mankind and all its institutions. I mean a voluntary transformation, not a bloody revolution. I believe it's possible.

So, did you look at the animal entries? What do you think? Like the pictures? All photographs unless pictures by me, unless otherwise stated!

Sorry, a weird substitution marred my previous entry. Here goes again:

I certainly did look at the pictures and essays. Reminded me of all the fond safari trips I took. I was /very/ impressed with the photos too - especially your white rhino ones.

Though I think that the layout of a couple of the photo pages is a bit odd - the giraffe, and the rhino pages have text squeezed in between two photos and it looks like some of the text is cut off.

But yep - very impressive. Both you and your cousin are quite the photographers!

*nods*. I agree with you about the same old thing being tried out again and again, despite no evidence for it working the first time. Even so called "revolutions" do just that - revolve - go round in circles, and rarely make much of a long term difference.

Is your interest in South Africa as a part of the rest of Africa typical? I remember feeling when I was there almost isolated from the rest of the continent - as if RSA was a displaced part of somewhere else, and not at all related to whatever 'awful violence' was going on to the North.

About the text being "squeezed in": I guess that has to do with the screen resolution. My own computer has a resolution of 1280*1024 and the pictures are small with large areas in between them filled with text. What is your screen resolution? I'll find out if this is a general problem and if so I'll respace the pictures.

I guess now that apartheid's gone we all realize that we're part of Africa. My own views go even beyond that - I see Africa as a part of the world, and the world as a part of the universe. There is no such thing as isolation.

News came in - it seems Kabila's really dead. I tell you, people have to think twice before deciding to rule a country over here, it's a rather hazardous job. Man o man, when will we get to the point where we can just all get along?
