Why Berkshire is in the Isle of Wight
Back in 1982, as a penniless sales rep (jacket, sample case, Cortina 1.6L) I noticed that Courage were closing their Reading Brewery - which had been H & G Simonds, That meant the Royal County of Berkshire no longer brewed any Real Ale.So I tried to start the Berkshire Brewery Company. Nearly worked too, but one of the backers pulled out at the last minute. "The Real Ale boom is over" he said. Well, for a given value of "over", anyway.
But since I'd got as far as registering the company, I keep it on as it's the only way I'll ever get to be the Director General of the BBC.
And in 2017, with our village becoming a suburb of Slough, with all the family houses in the close either mutliple rentals or masisvely extended and all the front gardens concreted over, LED street lights, the third runway and lots more besides, we fled to the Isle of Wight. With 3 breweries and over 160 pubs, what's not to like.
That's why the Berkshire Brewery Company, and its DG, are on the Isle of Wight.
