Musings

It's been a long time since I put a journal entry into this thing. I just thought I'd write about right now, just in case anybody ever happens to come across it...

I've basically been killing myself in work for the past 6 months. I leapt from music to what was supposed to be programming and music and sound effects. But it turned out to be pretty much full-on programming. I've been designing and writing a 3D sound plugin for 3DStudio Max called Thunder, you can see it at [URL removed by moderator].

Has it been worth it? Well that remains to be seen. I was starting to go a bit....peculiar. I'm still messed up. Every weekend for the past 3 weeks, I've slept through the entirety of Saturday. I've got two weeks holiday soon, so that should fix me. I'll sleep for the whole of the first week which means it won't be much of a holiday really.

I'll just have to wait and see what benefits it will bring, if any. I expect to be rewarded for being in work until at least 9pm every night for 5 months. If I'm not then I'll just have to "consider my position", won't I?

Is this really what I want to be doing? There's no doubt that I enjoy programming. It's basically a series of puzzles that I design and have to solve. And that is a good thing. I also feel more intelligent since starting this job. I haven't really used my mind so much since I was in school and I can feel the difference that some hard mental exercise has made. But I'm a musician. I don't want to have a "proper" job. I just want to do music....

It's around this moment in time that I have to decide which path my life should take. I'll keep you, Mr. h2g2, informed.

Job stuff

So last week I had a job interview and got the job. I'm moving to London on Monday (31st july 2000). Ludicrous! Lots to learn though, it's going to be hard work. I'm going to be a Sound Programmer, programming an audio engine and creating sounds and music. I expect to enjoy it and the prospects are very good indeed. We'll see how it goes in London though. It'll be a big change....

Free sound samples

You know, there are not enough free sound samples on the net, and what there are you can't guarantee are free from copyright - you never know where they've come from. It's very annoying. So I've decided to make my own and put them on mp3.com. I've never actually seen anybody do such a thing there yet. I'm sure lots of people will start doing it now. smiley - winkeye

Does anybody ever read these things? Just in case you are, and you are a musician-type: http://www.mp3.com/oneday/

Smart. smiley - smiley

The dawn of One Day

The first One Day track is finished. It is called Quintessential, and can be found at http://www.mp3.com/OneDay . It was started at around 6pm on the 13th of July 2000, and finished at around 4:30am on the 14th of July 2000. A total of about 10 and a half hours. A good start to an interesting idea.

Enjoy it. Comments welcome.

New music project

Today I decided on a new music project. I concluded that I never get the chance (or the inclination) to do my own stuff.

Because I've been doing game music for years, I can write music in any style that you'd care to imagine, and my CD collection consists of most style you'd care to imagine. This brings up a problem when I do my own stuff. What style should I write in? My tastes are very diverse. I'm always bothered about getting the style right to get the maximum number of listeners.

Well today I had an idea. Instead of being so bothered about what I do, I'll write "quick" music that has to be done in such a short time that I can't afford to think about it.

The One Day project is born.

I will endeavour to write complete tracks in less than one day.

The tracks will be posted up on my One Day page at http://www.mp3.com/OneDay/ . In fact, I'm halfway through the first track right now, and it's pretty good.
