I noticed your post on the FFFF 'Worried' forum. You might have to edit your browser options/preferences to allow your computer to not timeout so frequently.
In Microsoft IE, (if you have it.. if not, sorry, and good luck) go to View, then Internet Options, go to the Connection file, click on the Settings box, and you should see, about halfway down, a check box; next to it should read: Disconect if idle for [ ] minutes. Most browsers should have something similar.
Failing that, you can attempt to keep your connection active by opening multiple browsers and giving them all things to look for (trying to juggle these is difficult though). Or, you can get a new phone line, or a new Internet Service Provider, or kick your computer.
Good luck,
-jb

Thanks for your help jbliqemp. I am using MS Internet Explorer. "Disconnect when idle for 20 minutes" was set. But I don't think I'd managed to stay connected to h2g2 for much more than about 5 minutes at a time.
Also, "Disconnect when connection may no longer be needed" was checked. I unchecked that.
Also, "Hang up after sending and receiving" was checked. It didn't occur to me that IE or Outlook Express might be furkling about in the background taking liberties when I hadn't requested a mail send/receive. I've now unchecked that.
Also, I contacted my ISP (again) this time I spoke to someone who gave the impression of knowing what they were talking about. He instructed me to uncheck the Dial-Up Networking/Server Types/Allowed Network Protocols options: NetBEUI and IPX/SPX Compatible and leave TCP/IP checked. He said he didn't understand why I could get connected at all with those boxes checked. But the set up hasn't changed since the computer was new - a year or more ago and the connection problems seem mainly confined to using h2g2.
With a bit of luck, I'll be able to get this posted before being hoofed out.
