The Yorkshire Musical Saw Player
After studying music on the violin to degree standard with the intention of going into teaching music, I became side tracked by the start of personal computing. After College I became heaviliy involved in designing and building large scale computer networks for Colleges, universities and councils. Despite this music still plays a huge part of my life playing Eb tuba in brass bands to championship level, in orchestras and as a soloist with a musical saw.
Out of all of the interests and instruments the musical saw certainly offers me the greatest number of opportunities. It opens some doors to some of the most unusual, but fantastic occasions. Whether it's playing seriously in a skip, in a moving train upto Edinburgh, for a wedding, with a brass band, on a roundabout in Spain, in a folk festival, with 28 bagpipe players or on stage as a soloist. I don't think there is another instrument that offers so much variety.
It is wonderful to play as soloist with a large group of musicians, but equally I do like to have fun and I love the challenge to play at the most unusual of events. I now run the only UK web site dedicated to promoting musical saw playing which is at http://playthesaw.co.uk" >http://playthesaw.co.uk
/>I guess that puts me in that group of British Excentrics, but who cares as it is great fun.
