Clarity of Language
Having just spent an hour enjoying the articles and conversations in the Language section, I should like to engage my fellow writers in consideration of the frequently all-to-sad state of the language read and heard in The Media. OK, OK, I am currently living in Florida and anything approaching clarity of speech here is rather viewed with alarm.........
My current favorites from local news broadcasts:
"Hundreds of people gathered today to mourn the recent dual murder of Pastor Jones of the Church of God and his wife." (Only the Bible Belt would encourage such an original sect.....)
"We're using canine dogs to track the perpetrator" (An officer from the Department of Redundancy Department)
And on a related note, our eagle-eyed reporters sought out "fraud at ATM machines". One wonders what they think the M stands for.....
"Traffic on the I-4 was brought to a standstill at Anderson due to a car fire, but it's moving now." One would assume even more people would slow down to watch a moving car fire....
But on to my other passion (in addition to words, you filthy pigs)...baseball!
to be continued.............

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
