I'm going to one tonight. A proper one. Compton's on Old Compton Street. I've been there before and didn't like it much: not much decent beer, too many people and all a bit, well, you know, all a bit gay.
Still, the chap who's birthday we're drinking for is rather sweet.

Have a good one Roy. I'm rather fond of Old Compton street in general, myself. And there's always a nice Italianish atmosphere around.

*tsk*
I thought this was something about Electric Six ...
Why don't you go dressed as Abe Lincoln - what could be less gay.
Be careful.

I would go dressed as Abe but, alas, I've sat on my top hat.

Huh - that's what they all say ..... I accidently sat on this vacuum cleaner/top hat/microphone ......

The pink lounge? You know, there aren't enough gay bars with proper beers, and I'm sure such an extension would have at least two regulars!
Re: Old Compton Street. You're right Effers, it is quite pleasant there, and does have a very European feel to it, but I find the cruisy gay bars, and their lack of proper beer, a tad wearisome. I know there are not-so-cruisy bars there but nobody ever seems to want to go to them (mind you, I rarely socialise with gay peeps anyway.)
Re: being careful. Always! I'm not expecting anything to happen (though we did have a rather splendid evening/morning at the seminar in Brighton a few weeks back.) I have changed the sheets on the off chance though.

Gosh, blimey, gasshooks you changed the sheets? HAve fun... don't think I've ever been about in that neck of the woods But really you are right about gay bars and the utter lack of decent beerage they seem able to supply about four hundred varietys of vodka (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), but sod all on the beerage cept for crappy lagers We'll expect a full report

Oh, you are lucky, to be able to go to a gay bar now and then. There's only one here, and it's more of a nightclub for the early-twenties disco-trash crowd than an actual bar. I'm far too old for that sort of thing and I'd sooner retain the tattered shreds of my dignity...

Many of the London gay bars are virtually night clubs for the bright young things too. The rest seem to be populated with bears. Neither appeal that much!

Still, at least we've got gay bars. Things are different back in Margate!

At least I'm within striking distance of Sydney when I want to be somewhere with more than one option. It's just unfortunate the rest of the time when I'm obliged to be in Canberra and there's nowhere to go for fun. (Mind you, there's hardly any 'mainstream' pubs here either.)

Have you ever tried the French House in Dean street, just off old Compton street? Every time I've ever been its full of people of all ages, but with a gayish/intellectual and bohemian atmosphere. And the choice of wine is excellent. Its its fairly ancient and not at all trendy. If I meet up with blicky next week I was thinking we might go there later.

Effers, I've never heard of it! I really don't get to those parts much. Perhaps I should. Might see if I can steer us in that direction tonight, but I'm not optimistic.

I'm back. We ended up in a bar called G-A-Y which was pretty much as its name would lead one to expect. Lots of 80s pop, some Steps and things of that ilk, no proper beer, lots and lots of seriously good looking chaps, some of who seemed to very much want to dance (ahem) with me. But I was with my mate so didn't. One of my mate's mates was rather into me too, and was really quite nice, but I didn't take him up on the obvious offer.
Could it be that I'm not into casual sex?
Anyway, my mate's off to Amsterdam tomorrow morning. I'm slightly envious!
One of these days I'll find a gay bar with decent music and decent beer...
