I've no compunctions at all about picking up debris on the southern California beaches, occasionally to keep, usually to throw away at the nearest convenient trash bin, though many of the so. Cal. Beaches are raked and ploughed daily to remove tidal debris, a process I find objectionable since its disruptive of natural shoreline wildlife.

I remember once, hiking up Santiago Peak, finding an escaped Mickey Mouse helium balloon, picking it up and placing it in the trash pocket of my rucksack.

The first of my Cherokee purple tomatoes flowered today, a week after being transplanted from a 2 liter starting pot to a 16 liter.

They should be in full fruit by early autumn.

We were on the beach this evening, swimming and looking for purple plastic spacemen. . It's very strict on the Jurassic Coast, you get fined a thousand pounds if you are seen taking home a rock. Each rock has dinosaur memories.

If you take home a purple plastic spaceman you have to tell him about the dinosaurs in various cryptic languages, and do a series of mimes to further illustrate your point.

That last stupid paragraph reminded me of those little plastic astronauts you found in cornflakes packets. This was the 60s. It made breakfast just so worth it. And you could take your tiny astronaut to school. What else was in cornflake packets? There were other gifts. No point asking you lot, you're all waaaay too young ain't yer. heheh.

A thousand pounds, blimey, that is new one, ok I do think in terms geological heritage but that is big change for the coast line that seem to thrive on handing out hammers and chisels for a couple of quid a day while politely reminding people not to chip away at the crumbling cliffs...

No fruits as yet, the plants are still less than foot in height.

The tomatoes are about the same size and shape as medium to large globe tomatoes suitable for salads and sandwiches, but a deep purple in color like a purple eggplant, through and through.

I'll be needing to put up bird netting when they begin fruiting or the little devils will allow none to ripen.

I'll also leave them some decoy tomatoes of the more conventional kinds exposed.

Peanuts and tomatoes both domesticated and developed by native American cultures.

Lets not forget that other indigenous American plant - the cacti. Not sure whether any of them were domesticated - although a good source of fluid in dry environments.

I've got tomatoes of both types in my sample, carefully selected in their parent generation for a deep purple color.

One of the things about this plant that tends to throw people is that the foliage looks like that of an eggplant or New Zealand tomato rather than that of the more conventional kinds.

In a taste test, though, they're all but indistinguishable from the more common commercial tomatoes, slightly fleshier, seeds slightly more robust, rich in lycopenes for flavor.

I do love a cactus. I remember seeing the saguaro near Tucson in Arizona, and they are so amazing, they made me shake and have near death experiences.

What about the dinos then? There's this kids' display in the town centre at the moment, right where we park our bikes. There are lifesize dinos and a cave woman with wild hair, wearing skins, brandishing a heavy looking club, ready to take out anything or anyone that threatens. hahaHAH. Looks like me on a good day.



I don't know what to say to dinos. I stared one in the eye yesterday. I said something about how I respect the fact that we are related, but there's a distance between us, perhaps we should work on it, otherwise things will be tense at family weddings. Or funerals.
