Right the friendslists, when you go to someones personal space look under their name at the right, there'll be link saying "add friend" click it and they'll be added to you list.
as for the messages, go check out:

there are too pieces of coding between the top & tags, that'll show you how to do it hopefully, and as you've seen them in these posts you'll tell they're mine and therefore which is which
