Hi Galaxy Babe smiley - biggrin

I'm your sub-editor for Anne Askew - Lincolnshire Martyr. The new version is here A87804336 - please subscribe!

What a tale smiley - sadface but very well told. I made a few minor tweaks and added in some extra H2G2 links but let me know if there is anything you would like me to change.

I have a couple of questions:

- The piece "which was, at the very least, likely to cause offence to the clergy. At the other extreme, she was making enemies." reads a bit oddly to me, but I can't quite put my finger on it - I see it as "at the very least it was likely to cause offence to the clergy, and at the most extreme it was likely to cause people to become her enemy" - is that about right?

- "Anne frequently left the family home to go 'gospelling' (preaching about the gospels), often as far as London. No doubt at the end of his tether, Kyme refused to accept her back into his house" - was it many times that he accepted her coming back before he reached the end of his tether and refused her?

Thank you smiley - ok

Thanks SashaQ, I've subscribedsmiley - ok

"at the very least it was likely to cause offence to the clergy, and at the most extreme it was likely to cause people to become her enemy" there's too much repetition in that, how about:

"Such discussions usually entailed arguments about certain teachings, which was, at the very least, likely to cause offence to the clergy." (delete: At the other extreme, she was making enemies.)

then after:

"It is known that Anne spoke up for the reformers in public, something which was exceedingly dangerous at the time."

add: This behaviour probably earned Anne many enemies.

I am not sure how many times Thomas Kyme took Anne back, but as a staunch Catholic he had no choice as divorce was out of the question (for him) and he needed her to raise his children! No doubt his pride was hurt when she kept going off as well. He must have been exasperated with her, imagine what it took to get from Lincoln to London in those days, probably on horsebacksmiley - bruised and returning with her, only for her to leave again.

Thanks Galaxy Babe smiley - biggrin

The 'enemies' bit is now very clear - thank you smiley - ok

I'm still a little bit unclear about the gospelling situation. I had a look on the internet - am I right in thinking she only went gospelling as far as London once before Thomas reached the end of his tether and turned her out?

Thanks!

smiley - biggrinThat's right, but then the "divorce" judge ordered him to take her back, which he did, he went to London and took her back home, but she left again! I think she must have mostly done her gospelling around Lincolnshire, as she'd have been on foot.

Anne frequently left the family home to go 'gospelling' (preaching about the gospels), *once* as far as London.

I've tweaked the sentences to: "Anne frequently left the family home to go 'gospelling' (preaching about the gospels), and once went as far as London. No doubt at the end of his tether after that, Kyme refused to accept her back into his house so Anne returned to London to seek a divorce."

I hope that's OK
