Who's Online Code

Post 1

Hey! Me again!

The who's online code can be a bit tempermental... it's pretty picky. here are a couple pointers that might help:

1) make sure you have the GuideML button selected, and have HIT the Change Type button- it doesn't take effect till you do that...

2) make sure that you start and end with these tags: (the who's online code goes here)

if you do those two things, you should have it up and running!

Ahh! Excellent job! I see you're quite the quick learner! this promises to be fun!

I'm now going to tell you 2 more helpful things that i've learned...

the first is The GuideML Clinic... not just the main page of it- that's helpful, but if you follow the links to Frequently Asked QWuestions and to Instructions, they have stuff on how to use COLORS (!), FISH (!), Title Bars(not quite as big a !, but still VERY cool on a page) and TONS of other stuff. Anything you find there is for your use. feel free to cut and paste to your heart's delight!

Instructions: http://www.h2g2.com/A155701

The SECOND... now this is the big one... the second is one that i have reservations about mentioning... more on that later. It is also THE most useful tool i've found for learning how to use guideML/Html tags.
it's this..
when you are looking at a page that has an element that you think is interesting, and you want to see how it's done- what combo of tags, what ordering, etc.. you can position your mouse arrow anywhere on the page, and RIGHT click. just like you were going to cut and paste, but you don't have any text highlited.

Try it. now there *should* be an option for "VIEW SOURCE". click it, and you'll get a notepad popup with the code for the whole page. it can be a lot of code to weed thru, but i've found that looking for the page text (the paragraphs and such that appear on the page) is the easiest way to navigate.

You can learn ENDLESS tricks with this method. there is that one catch tho.

DON'T STEAL CODE. it's the HEIGHT of rudeness, and can make you an outcast.. not to mention REALLY ticking people off...
ASK ASK ASK if you find something you like, and would like to borrow it (ie, a picture, a particular gadget, etc) post a note to that person's page telling them how cool you think it is and how much you'd like to borrow it... i've never been turned down yet!

the big thing about this place isn't knowing the ropes, it's knowing how to fiind the people that know the ropes...
Go visit Bruce and the GuideML... you'll love it there!

so on that note i'll wander off...
still here if you need help getting your fish to work!

*stretches* I'm good. I'm using the Babel Fish to translate some German spam for someone...I have to remove the link on my page cause the people on my chat are complaining about another person who put a link up on Yahoo (too many newbies) so I'm taking it down before they flog me :-=

And, when I get around to it, I might do something worthwhile to my page. When I bother to learn that special code-thing ^^;;;
