Paul's house
This is paul's place. I am a one headed alien from Toronto, currently residing in Wilmington, Delaware. Wilmington is a small town south of Philadelphia, that while being a very nice place, is not terribly exciting.
The most exciting news that has happened recently, is that the government decided to shut down a section of I95, in order make road improvements, which, allegedly, will improve traffic flow. The powers that be have decided that they can eliminate delays on I95 by eliminating the primary cause of the congenstion: cars. No cars will be allowed on I95 after April 7th, and after this time, the traffic jams on I95 will disappear. This is a very imaginative way to solve a traffic problem, and could have only been dreamed up by a bureaucrat.
I work in Philadelphia, which, according to locals, is the birthplace of democracy. I guess the indians -- err -- first nations peoples -- who lived where Philadelphia now sits, may have been democratic at the time that the Greeks came up with the concept, but I doubt it.
Delaware, where I live, is the "first state". However, Philadelphia is the "birthplace of the nation". That sounds like a bit of a contradiction to me. Delawarians claim DE to be the first state because it was the first state to sign the constitution. They seem to forget that the constitution wasn't written until about eleven years after the declaration of independence. "I hereby declare Delaware to be the first state, due to the fact that it is the first state in which Paul Gardiner held US residency." I should have the state add that to their welcome signs. The logic is just as sound as their reason for being the first state.
Delaware also claims to be the "Diamond State". I have no idea where that one came from. There are no diamonds in Delaware, the state is not shaped even close to a diamond (maybe a rough diamond -- but that diamond would be shaped like Delaware, not the other way around), and Delaware has nothing whatsoever to do with the diamond industry. If you know the answer to this question, please let me know. No-one here has a clue.
However, the Philly area does have some good points:
- Jennifer (my girlfriend) is from this area (major positive point)
- I have chosen to live here (ok -- that may be a negative)
- They have better cheese-steaks than any other city (no other city has found reason to make a cheese steak, but Philly is still the best at it.)
- The murder rate in down town Philly is lower than the murder rate in down town Washington DC.
- People in Philadelphia make lots of fun of New Jersey
- Philadelphia is only eight hours from Toronto.
- Philadelphia is not New York
- There are lots of things named after Benjamin Franklin. Although his historical reputation of "discovering" electricity is vastly overrated, he was apparently a very nice fellow.
Note: Sorry -- I actually like Philadelphia -- it's just that there is the strong possibility that the Flyers will play the Maple Leafs in the play-offs this year, and I'm trying to get a head start on my Philly bashing. (I even like cheese steaks on occasion, but don't tell anyone.)
My dog, Riley, has a page here too. He can be found at:
