A little about me...
Hello, my names John and I’m a grumpy old man!
There, I’ve confessed. Do I feel better? No, not yet, but I’ll keep going.
Along with several of my workmates we’ve formed our own trades union, AUGOM - The Amalgamated Union of Grumpy Old Men. We work for a large multi-national computer company, one of those with a very young, lively spirit. This presents the chronologically challenged with a few problems, not the least of which is the need to keep up with all these jumped up young pups, who think that giving themselves fancy job titles like Director or CEO, means they run the place.
We of AUGOM, however, have our uses. We work in the sales department and, every so often, a mature face is needed to convince the customer we know what we’re talking about. Some sort of a cross between Captain Birdseye and the Ancient Mariner to provide just the right balance between hard-bitten experience and boyish (or girlish) enthusiasm. So, I not only survive in a company full of people half my age, but I thrive. I get to work more or less how and where I like, on the projects I like. I can balance my home, my family and my hobbies and still indulge my obsession (work) to a sufficient degree so that it funds the rest.
I get to travel all over the world on all sorts of transport, so perhaps I can share a thought or two, and also pick a few tips along the way.
So, do I feel better now? Well, to quote from Douglas Adam’s Marvin (someone older, wiser and grumpier than even me) “I think,” he murmured at last, from deep within his corroding rattling thorax, “I feel good about it.”
