Smells
Posted May 2, 2000
Is there any organic chemist out there who can confirm or deny my theory that apparently unrelated substances may have a similar smell because of some similarity in their 3-D geometric molecular structure?
These similarities often (not surprisingly) seem to link foodstuffs with bodily secretions. For example, is it my imagination, or do tomatoes smell disarmingly (!) similar to sweat? The pear-drops/nail varnish similarity is another well-known one. Further examples have occurred to me from time to time, and I will add these when I can call them to mind.
