Interesting new wording in moderation emails

I'm fascinated by the new wording in moderation emails.
"Postings to BBC Communities will be removed if they:
* Are considered likely to provoke, attack or offend others..."
Amazing. In addition to not being sexist, homophobic, racist and all the other stuff you shouldn't be online, apparently now we are supposed not to say anything if it is CONSIDERED LIKELY TO PROVOKE. Pretty much annihilates the possibility of conversation on most subjects worth talking about, doesn't it?

Well, not sure about how it will affect conversation, but it seems that debate is no longer being encouraged . . .
Just saw you started a thread about this on the Forum. Will pop over there.

This bites, but I am starting to get a bit worried. Looks like the Beeb is ready to totally Beeb-ify h2g2 now.
Lets face it though this sort of thing has been expected since the BBC took over h2g2, it has just taken a bit longer than expected.

So, what's everyone's favourite flower? Honestly, I won't be upset if you say it isn't orange blossom.

Although, Jimster has sort of explained what htey mean by 'likely to provoke' it is very vague as it does not say what it is likey to provoke:
1) An outburst of joyous singing.
2) an outburst of shingles.
3) a few days of heated and enjoyable debate.
4) pubic hair to stand on end.
5) David Letterman to make a list of 10 things the post is likely to provoke
6) peace in the Middle East
7) intellectually stunted morons to press the yikes button
7) Japan to stop hunting whales for scientific porpoises
8) MP's to start telling the truth.
9) Dubya to start doing monkey impressions
10) normal, sane, intelligent, rational people to complain about the ever increasing nannyness of everything and anything to stop people being offended
10) normal, sane, intelligent, rational people becoming offended at this turn of events that seems to be a push towards running the site down (along with the slower updates, loading times and closing of threads and f**king w**k-toss pro-f**kin*fanny*ty filters)
10) me to grow a 12 inch penis.
Yes, I know I repeated some numbers but the ones with repeats probably *will* happen!!!!

What's your point though?
Debates are encouraged; it's just that the discussions must be kept clean. If I was new to H2G2, I wouldn't want to be scared off or offended by somebody here. Try to have some consideration, folks.

H2g2 is what it is. You visit, you like it, you stick around. You visit, you don't like it, you go elsewhere. The site shouldn't have to change to accommodate a newcomer.
As has been said before, there are umpteen different areas of h2g2, there's usually somewhere that people can find that they fit in. I certainly don't want a homogenised, sanitised place where people avoid anything the least controversial. Hopefully these new rules will be applied with some common sense & latitude.

It used to be, or so I have heard from older members, that H2G2 posts go through pre-mod for each single post. It is a sign of the Administration staff and Moderators' trust in us that they will trust us to control ourselves, and however tempting, this is a privilege not a right so may we all be wiser about our diction!
Key: Complain about this post
