Lights in the sky

The original conversation is too far back for me to find just now but I seem to recall that you mentioned having had a UFO moment some time ago.
Sorry but I don't remember the exact configuration you described but would this look familiar?

OK, I know it's the Mail, but...

Lights in the sky

Hmm... vaguely similar but...
What I saw was this: in a bright daylight sky in mid afternoon, against blue sky, not cloud, I and two other people saw four stationary white lights forming two equilateral triangles. One of the lights was significantly brighter than the rest. The entire "structure" subtended and angle possibly one third that of a full moon.
It didn't move across the sky at all. We observed these objects for about three minutes, during which three of them dimmed to the point of non-visibility. The fourth dimmed also, but having started out brighter, remained visible. It was shortly after obscured by cloud.
They maintained their relative positions perfectly, which made me think they were connected in some way (perhaps by cables), because there was no structure visible between them.
I've seen Iridium flares and the ISS, and these objects looked like that - unresolved bright lights. The obvious difference was that these objects were completely stationary and I was looking north from a position approximately 53 degrees latitude, so they couldn't be geostationary.
The obvious possibilities are
(1) weather balloons - but do they get connected together? The pattern was very regular
(2) satellites - but do they fly in formation like that, plus sats would need some pretty powerful stationkeeping to maintain a position like that.
Still baffled, but not thinking they're alien...
(Slightly amused by the witness in the Mail: "they looked alien" - how do you tell???)

Ah well... just a thought.
To the best of my knowledge this doesn't seem to fit in with the usual configuration of weather balloons or satellites though I suppose neither could be ruled out.
What did strike me though was that both sightings are loosely in the same part of the country, only about 50miles apart? Coincidence probably.
Intriguing though.
