Can I upgrade my iMac?
Pierre de la Mer ~ sometimes slightly worried but never panicking ~ Started conversation Feb 3, 2013
I tried ASK, alas to no avail, so I will try here instead:
Is 'Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard' compatible with a (Late 2006) 24-inch iMac (MA456LL)?
According to this it is:

So why do people tell me I can't? Any ideas? Any input from people with personal experiences?
in advance!

Who says that you can't and why?
I have run all OS X versions from 10.2 till (still only) 10.7 on different Macs, but I don't think I've done any *upgrade* to 10.6, so don't trust anything I say!
The original OS on your machine should be Tiger 10.4.7 or 10.4.8, but afaik you should be able to run both Leopard and Snow Leopard fine. You should even be able to run Lion if you have at least 2 GB of RAM*, but to install Lion, you'd first need Snow Leopard anyway.
Some of the new technologies in Snow Leopard ( incl. OpenCL and 64-bit architecture ) might not be used on a Late 2006 iMac, but I'd say it's still worth upgrading to 10.6 which was probably the last time Apple actually *improved* things...
(* you can install max. 4 GB of RAM on a MA456LL, but only 3 GB will be adressed!)

Snow Leopard now running fine on both iMacs
Upgraded to 10.6.8
Now to purchase a Mountain Lion - only I will probably have to buy a "family license" since I want to run it on two iMacs
And I wouldn't be surprised if demands I buy the same for the Snow Leopard
Doesn't look too expensive though

Er...
I can try to look it up again, but if I read my last post correct, you should be able to run Lion 10.7 on your Late 2006 iMac, but not Mountain Lion 10.8!
Getting Lion seems to be quite difficult, you'll probably have to *call* Apple to get it. But *if* you get it, I *think* you only need one license...

I never told you I can indeed not run Mountain Lion. The moment I clicked "download" I was informed my iMacs are in fact too old
Not much of a problem though. I can still access the net, only have to use Sa fari when I want to netbank
Should keep me going for some time and after that I can still use it as a music machine, dvd-player and more
