I notice that the blurb for one entry on the next Front Page has a footnote crediting Lanza for her work. I've never seen a footnote on the front page, and I'm not sure that it will work.

Does anybody know? Has anyone tried it?

It's not actually on one of the FP Entries, it's a tongue in cheek comment on the Showcase. I am trialling it, and if it doesn't appear correctly it will be revised before publication.

It may end up on the very bottom of the page. We've done footnotes on the FP of before, and that's where they land.

The Front Page uses rather odd GuideML, which is not used anywhere else, so that's why I'm a bit suspicious. It breaks the page up into a number of sections, each with its own and . I suspect the footnote, if it is displayed at all, will be within the section.

Well, as long as we keep an eye out for it and remove it immediately if it looks wrong, then we shouldn't have a problem.

Does it not appear on page preview?

Good idea. I've tried it with a Page Preview.

The footnote index appears (the little superscript 1) but the footnote itself isn't displayed.

Is there a link on the superscript, and if so, where does it take you?

There's a link but it does bring you anywhere.

OK, that's different behaviour to using TEST99999 to preview a guide entry. The footnote and link appear, and the link works.

We can still test it in live, but I'm not confident.

An alternative way might be to deconstruct the footnote, ie use a superscript with a link to an explicitly coded hypertext fragment.

We've our first full update ready to go - the UCAS one. It has a picture and everything.

Should we promote this in the "New Guide Entries" slot on the Front Page, or somewhere else?

I'd like to see that one as a proper Front Page slot, it's highly relevant to students, although the deadline for this year has just been passed.

What do the others think?

Just after I posted this I read HIs offer in the Announcement thread to return to being a sub-ed.

I left a message yesterday with him, to see was that a genuine offer, but he hasn't replied yet.

We're doing well on the sub-editor appeal, as we now have Mina and Matt, as well as possibly Honest Iago.

Mina was a prodigious sub-editor in the apst.

This is great news, as the sub-editing is time consuming and we need to share the work load more..

And HonestIago is now a sub as well.
