Gnomon - time to move on

I've created a new topic "Editorial Tools and Processes" in Noesis:

Noesis Forums --> H2G2 --> H2G2C2 --> Editorial Team

I'm putting in details of how the Editorial Process works, and how we can do it manually using only the Edit function, on the assumption that none of the other tools will be available.

Thanks smiley - hug this is excellent. I sent Pastey a link so he can read it directly.

Tav was asking about the mechanics of uploading the images too, there is an email back and forth with myself, Tav and Pastey entitled 'Blobbing'

I'm afraid I know nothing about uploading the images. But I suspect that techy people have ways of getting files onto the Noesis servers.

I notice that the picture of Robbie Stamp on the front page is at:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/blobs/robbie_stamp_promo.jpg

I believe there is a folder called "blobs" on the BBC server and the image file (jpg) is in that folder. So the techy people should be able to see a "blobs" folder on the Noesis server. If so, all we need to do is get them to copy our jpg files to there, and then we'll be able to reference them in entries.

I suspect the folder will be called something like:

d:\inetpub\wwwroot\h2g2\blobs

We had a few clues about the file names in the documentation from Sam, I am just studying it again to see if it helps. smiley - laugh

Well, I didn't really do it myself. It involved e-mailing it to Pastey. But I did take and process the photo myself!smiley - smiley

Did you once manage to upload a picture yourself?

No, if have to add any new images, they go this route

Rosie hand delivered to me

I scan the image and send it to Tavaron

Tavaron photoshops the image and emails it to Pastey

Pastey uploads it and emails the file name back to Tavaron.

Tavaron emails me the file name

I add the image to the Entry.

In between one or more of these stages is where we get unstuck, bits of the file name get corrupted or we simply lose the email with the filename in it. I am so looking forward to when we can do this ourselves.

Mine was slightly simpler. I took the photo, copied it onto my computer, photoshopped it, renamed it to the correct name, e-mailed it to Pastey, he uploaded it and sent me back the name that I had sent him. I then added it to the entry.

I'm glad to see you're posting this morning. I was wondering would your laptop start up ok.

It was quite amusing last night (for me, not for you). I was busy uploading a photo and I suddenly saw the little orange Skype box pop up in the bottom right corner of the screen with:

Lanzababy
Aaaarrrggggghhhh!

My first thought was, Oh no, what have I done!

I really didn't dare turn it off - I just let it go into hibernation overnight, so I could finish the Front Page for Sunday. I decided to complete it and send you all a text version of it, in case this machine really does die on me before then.

I think it must have been a software conflict because Chrome had begun crashing, and when I switched off, it told me that there were still programmes running - which was odd when I look back. I don't think it shut down properly. So I am keeping my fingers crossed that it was just a software error that I can avoid in future.

See you later

You didn't install any of those Chrome add-ons recently? I discovered there was a calculator you could download for free which is available in Chrome; and a few other similar apps. Then I couldn't get into Facebook, and various other websites stopped working. I removed the add-ons and everything was more-or-less back to normal.

Did you find the user number of the researcher who provided the picture of the motor-bike?

No, I've not installed any add-ons, but I think I did have three separate lots of Chrome browsers open, ( I was keeping things separate) and also Opera open. I'll just stick with a multitude of tabs in future.

Yes, I still have to fix the credits, but the U number is on the spreadsheet.

Good front page! smiley - ok

I would have gone for a slightly less eye-piercing blue on Brunel, myself.

My choice would be #ACDDFE.

The page colours seem to be very much a point of personal preference, when I was testing them originally, the artists hated the pastel effects, and I know I dislike reds and dark greens.

I'd have probably gone for paler had it not been for their dislike less strong colours the other week. Plus, sitting here in the bright sunlight has a tendency to fade colour.

Thanks, if it was you that made the three Entries 'Edited' by the time I had a moment to do it last night it was 1am, and by 8am this morning when I switched on, to do it, some kind soul had attended to it already. I guessed it was you! smiley - smooch

Yes, I made those entries Edited and categorised them. I didn't get back to the computer until about 12 and you didn't seem to be around, so just in case your computer had snuffed it, I did what I could.
