Possibly pressure from some of the more religious people in the family

I suppose, but you could just have a biblical name, but then again most everyone does. We both do!

Mind you, mine could well have been Valentine, Dad got off lightly.
It was probably something to be topical too.

Ugh. Imagine being called Valentine... I suppose you're lucky that your parents aren't celebrities, then you'd have had no hope. I was born on an anniversary of the discovery of the planet Uranus, my mother resisted the temptation to call me Urana...
Glad she did, too. I may then have wound up with two names I hate rather than just one

It could be shortened to Val, and at least everyone you know would remember your birthday
Celebrities and their kids, I would hate to be called Heavenly Hirani Tiger Lily, or Fifi Trixibelle for that matter. Slightly over the top.
I take it Joanna isn't one of the names you hate, otherwise you wouldn't use it as a nickname

Well done It does give rise to my mistakenly being called Joanne, though. I got to the point at school where I corrected every teacher every time they made that mistake.
I'm going to drop my middle name by deed poll at Easter.
Fifi Trixibelle; imagine trying to become something like a physicist being called that? LOL!

I've given up trying to correct everyone's pronunciation of my surname, almost no-one gets it right.
So what is this name you hate?

My middle name is Dele. It means Joy, and is a closely guarded secret IRL. and I mean closely...
Pronounced the same as in Delhi for Delicatessen, that is. Ugh, I hate it.
How is your surname pronounced... are you up to typing it phonetically?

As in Thunderbirds it's pronounced Tracy
But spelt as Treacy, in the manner of the famous hat designer

I knew how it was spelt, but I had been wondering how to say it...
I bet you get lots of fun alternatives

Mostly treesee . Mildly irritating but at least I am now aware of when someone is registering me or attempting to get my attention.

That would probably have been my guess
Two people conduct our choir, Jo (Joseph) and Sam. Most people call me Jo, not something I encourage, but anyway.... the strange thing is, my mind filters out when Sam calls me Jo, because I think he (and no one else) is talking to Joseph because he does such a lot of the time.

I have had similar problems for ages. At school there was another person with my name in my class and in the dancing club there is also someone else with the same name. I am constantly turning around when people want to speak to these others.

I remember in my maths class in the 9th year we had 5 other Matts. In History, in the same year, in my class there were two girls called "Joanne Harris"... very weird...

Our house has two Toms and two Simons... they don't get muddled up, though, there are identifiers for them

In Connaught Hall R block corridor 5 there were 2 Simons too - so we called one "Intelligent Simon" and the other "Garfie", as in "Simon & Garfunkle" to avoid confusion. I now share a house with Garfie.

We have German-stroke-English-Tom and Tom-from-Hong-Kong... but you can usually tell which one by the context. Same with Simons, but one of them is 3rd-year-Simon anyhow
What's wrong with sharing a house with Garfie?

He is very anti-H2G2 and thinks we all spend too much time on it. Instead of keeping his opinions to himself, he proceeds to shout them at us on a regular basis - which I don't think I should have to cope with. I don't tell him what to like and dislike...
