But epigrams won't make you walk for two hours to get home when you've missed the Tube and are too tight to pay a dodgy minicab driver. Oscar Wilde's wit doesn't make you p**s in your ex's flowerbed. The bon mots of GBS never lead to finding out that the woman who looked like Tiff who you said had great breasts, was in fact Martine McCutcheon. Dorothy Parker's dryness doesn't make us slip into oblivion in a curry house in Brick Lane and sing songs from the shows on Liverpool Street Station. Even Richard Stillgoe's devastating critique of modern manners won't make you collapse in the gutter outside Highbury and Islington Tube station throwing down the gauntlet of champagne puke.
