I have a swimming pool and let me hasten to say that I inherited the damn thing and that if I were looking for a place to live I would avoid a house with a pool ... but I have a swimming pool, and now I am worried. Do you think that my habit of wearing swimwear is likely to attract sharks up the I-4 from Tampa? The picture of the shark-bit torso is utterly horrifying.

Well, there's only one way to ensure that no sharks come near - join HRASC and doff the cossie!

I have heard of crafty sharks, posing as tourists and hitching rides inland. There is also the large occurances of Land Sharks (usually trying to pass themselves off as Pizza Boys, Candygrams, or Telegram people)
I would say that it's better to be too safe than sorry Join HRASC, we will protect you
As for the shark attack picture, I agree, I really could have done without seeing it.

I'll try and get a less gory one.

There, changed it, is that better?

Looks good. If other people prefer the gore, it's okay by me, I just tend to stay away from stuff like that if possible. Hopefully it wasn't an inconvenience.

No, no invenience, I had that picture already anyway. In fact I was a bit unsure of which to put up, as one *is* a bit over-the-top, I have to admit.

But now that I've seen it I have to know its provenance. There seems to be no bleeding; was the victim expired? Was this a personal photo (that is, were you there?) or is a reprint of a news photo?
They show some pretty horrid stuff on telly these days. In fact there is one cable channel, TLC (The Learning Channel), which has a long-running series of documentaries of trauma centers all around the US. You could call these programs a terrific deterrent against drunk driving and packing heat. The camera doesn't shrink from showing the damage to the poor sod on the stretcher. I've taken to calling that channel the Disaster Channel....

TLC used to have a program called Operation .... woah ... I saw hip replacement surgery once, they took you through the entire operation without an edit, yikes.
Lil do you watch The Discovery Channel also? I call it Mammals and Missiles because if there insn't a nature documentary on then you are probably watching the Dept. of Defense commercial on how cool the Tomahawk cruise missile is
As for the shark attack victim, I think they probably survived as the new picture is the after, with stitches.

LOL
As it happens, I am sitting cross-legged on the floor at my coffee table with the laptop, while the telly burbles on with ... the Discovery Channel. An hour ago it was Siberian tigers. Now I'm watching Life on the USS Harry Truman (or some aircraft carrier quite like it). The camera managed to be on, running and in focus as a hapless F-14 self-destructs and the flyers eject. Is there anything we can't experience on teevee?
Tornadoes, I've seen 'em all on the Disaster Channel. Likewise floods, avalanches, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Been there, done that. Something irresistible about a carrier jet take-off, though.

I agree, could we please get something new on .... I've seen everything on TLC and Discovery Channel. And of course if you want to look back at what has happened just pop on The History Channel
As for the carrier jet take-off, I find that's there's something irresistible about anything to do with carriers, especially on the flight deck. The ballet of people doing their jobs while jets are landing and taking off every 35 seconds is just beautiful.
Of course, I'm the guy that like to listen to the com-tech channels (you know during shows when the director is saying things like ... camera one go in 5,4,3,2,1 go .... main lights on in 3,2,1 go main lights) If you have never heard it, it's great.
I guess I just like watching and listening to people that know what they are doing, doing it well.
