Writing on H2G2

Having been away a while I came back and had a nose around the various threads as per usual and am somewhat perturbed at the amount of "negative" threads and postings about the Edited Guide and the feeling of doom for the site.
Is there any "positive" threads or journals I may have missed? Is it worth newcomers thinking about doing something for the Guide or the site in general?
I've enjoyed reading all aspects, from the Post, to the Alternative Writing Workshops, the Edited Articles and non-edited alike. Seems this site has a wealth of talent using all manner style and types of writing so why all the negativity?
Is there another site that offers the same? I've looked at sites like Myspace, Facebook, Blogger and Livejournal and frankly not impressed.
Wikipedia has no community as such and so much data is incorrect it's hardly a reliable source.
I'll hang fire before I decide to do anymore simply because if the site is doomed and liable to be closed down then no point in making an effort is there?
I will now disappear and re-read the original HGTTG, just to remind myself what Douglas Adams did and why he started this site.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
