Any good fish and chip shops in LA?

I can't think of any right off the top of my head, and was wondering if you'd actually managed to find any.

No, da*n it!! There used to be a great place in Santa Monica (home to a lot of Brit expats) called "Ye Mucky Duck", a real traditional pub, but there's a hotel there now... and another great place called the "John Bull" on Arroyo in Pasadena (another fave place for expats), also now gone .
There is a place called "Ye Olde King's Head", at 2nd and Wilshire in downtown Santa Monica, but I've never eaten there. And there's a place called "Tudor House" across the street from there on Second, and that place *is* good -- almost has the real deal on Cornish Pasties...meaning just like my mom used to make! I don't know if they have fish and chips but probably so, more a tea place, lunches and so on, with a little "groceries from home" shop on the premises. I HOPE it's still there...
There's a new pub in Pasadena called something unoriginal like "British Pub" or the like, on Colorado right around Allen Ave, just east of Hill St. by Pasadena City College. Friends have been there and really liked it, I haven't gone yet. Unfortunately, they're on the bones of a little Italian place I liked, La Grotto Di Capri...
But in West LA? I just don't know, I suppose you could search on British pub or some such? I've tried with very limited results. Montana Redhead has a pub in her neck of the woods in Irvine, might want to ask her about it. Just depends how far you want to go for the real deal (wrapped in greasy newspaper -- Yeah!).
Go ahead, ask me about a restaurant between Santa Barbara and the Orange Curtain -- I probably have seen/heard of it and maybe even eaten there -- and my shape shows it!

Coolness!
All the restaurants near PCC tend to be pretty good, I'm sorry the Grotto is no longer there. Is the Pho shop still around? Will have to snoop around and see if the new place is any good or not.
Tried Ye Olde King's Head, and the vinegar they have doesn't have that strong true-vinegar (vs distilled) malty flavor you can get in the UK. Add that to the indifferent service, and the fish or the chips tend to not be hot by the time you get them. You'd think proximity to the ocean would result in good, fresh stuff, wouldn't you?
You're on!
Do you know any good places to get enchiladas late at night out here? We have Los Tacos in West Hollywood that is 24hr, but they're the old fashioned lard-with-everything type of place. This is tasty mind you, but not a good long term solution. El Compadre on Sunset is open kinda late, but is primarily a margarita restaurant instead of a food place.

Hmmm, how late at night are you looking for? I'm afraid I can't think of any "healthier" alternatives which would meet both your criteria -- open late, and no lard. And how far are you willing to drive?
I think one of my all time faves is "La Luz Del Dia" at the South end of Olvera Street just North of the bandstand off the plaza. They are definitely not your healthier alternative, but the price is right and they are superb -- hand made tortillas!! I recommend their carnitas plate or if you like fire, their beef tacos. But, maybe not open late.

Is that the little enclosed-patio Thai place across from the campus? They've just remodeled, I think, not moved. "Pataya," (Thai) which used to be on Union in Old Town, has moved to Fair Oaks in the northern part of South Pasadena -- and they are definitely worth your time.
I have to admit I haven't done as much scouting of restaurants since my former BF got married 5 years ago...

What was I thinking? The place across from PCC is Pataya, the place I liked on Union (now on Fair Oaks) was Patikan.
And I DO know a good (not cheap) place for fish and chips -- Cameron Seafood on Colorado, a few blocks east of PCC. Not British style (as far as I know, since Ye Olde Mucky Duck was my only genuine ex-pat referent) but fresh and good.

Hi, Sea
I went to Brit Pub today for lunch -- chips not much to write home about, but the fish was excellent. On Colorado, in Pasadena, one block east of Allen.

Wouldn't you know it? I finally find a good fish shop, and I can't go there anymore, because I can't have fried food anymore after a heart attack!! Arrgghhhh!!!

What is Footinooti?
I am sorry to hear you were ill. Are you better now?
I have heart problems, but haven't had an attack yet. If i promise to not overindulge, will you tell me where the shop is?

Hmmm, Footnooti was born out of one of the ever present disputes, one which had degenerated (as seems to be almost inevitable these days on hootoo) into the usual ad hominem attack -- you know the kind, one of those "so's your old man" things, instead of remaining a fairly civil exchange of ideas/opinions on the original topic.
Someone named Trin decided that the response to that should properly be, ""Focus only on the issue, not outright on the individual"
which became the hootoo-specific acronym: FOOTINOOTI Really, it's too early to tell, but it just might work to keep some of these interesting discussions on track, instead of turning into perpetual slogging matches. We'll see. You can sign up to join the Footinooti Society here, if you'd like to make a stand on the nonsense: A11634707
As to the fish and chip place, it's the one I mentioned in Pasadena, around PCC. It's on Colorado Blvd, a block west of Allen, called the Brit Pub (it used to be the Grotto di Capri). The decor is marginally fakey, but the food is good -- the peas are authentically mushy, and the fish is lovely, fresh and crisp! I was looking forward to trying their Cornish Pasties, but I'll have to hold off for a while.
I'm sorry to hear your ticker is a little wonky. Take my advice though, and if you do need to start treatment, check out *all* your options. I had a very mild heart attack, and I will probably always wonder if I should have tried something a little less drastic than a triple bypass, first.
I'm doing pretty well now, though. I'm able to walk a bit. The only thing which drives me nuts now, is that my ankles swell so much I'm spending *way* too much time lying down with my feet elevated. Going to be very hard to hold down a job like that!!
Take care, and let me know what you think of the pub, if you go there.
