Hi from Hushai!
I'm not sure what to write in this intro to my home page. So, let me tell you why I chose the nickname "Hushai," and along the way I'll say something about myself, to be added to, and maybe corrected, later. About a year ago I joined another web community and was asked to choose a username. All the reasonable permutations of my own real name seemed to be taken. I teach university Bible courses (it's really just a slightly overgrown liberal arts college that CALLS itself a university), and that day we'd been looking at the adventures of King David in II Samuel -- quite an interesting set of episodes, by the way; if you've never read them, by all means find a Bible and do so -- and I recalled that one of David's associates was named "Hushai the Archite." I figured that THAT name, anyway, was probably not taken, so I called myself "Hushai." I had some other reasons for liking that name, which maybe I'll reveal someday, if you ask me nicely, or even if you don't. Ever since then I've found it convenient to stick with that as a username for places on the web.
I am an associate professor of religion, and a Presbyterian minister. I used to be a pastor, but felt that teaching was, as we Reformed tradition types say, my "calling." Besides religion in general and especially theology, I am interested in science fiction and am, needless to say, a big fan of Douglas Adams. His books provide wonderful classroom illustrations; the Babelfish is a favorite of mine for use in Philosophy of Religion. I have tried, off and on since the age of six, to be a magician (entertainment type, not "real" magic), without a great deal of success. I am pretty clumsy, I'm afraid. But, I still love to read about legerdemain and prestidigitation and all that stuff.
My wife is a lawyer for the US government. She's law, I'm gospel. (Theological joke. Let me know if you got it.) Anything we say to each other is under the Triple Privilege: Lawyer-Client, Clergy-Penitent, and Marital. (Legal joke.)
